Is vintage clothing dangerous? (specifically polyester/synthetic fibers)?

I'd consider vintage clothing to be dangerous if it made me long for disco. I went to one once but only because I'd met this dancer girl who had the nicest.... Never mind. I wrote a song about it later called, "My Sick Little Dance."

There is one definite danger with polyester. Heatstroke. Especially in sub-tropical and tropical climates. And disco dancing.

i'm probably too late for this topic, but I do see a lot of devil's dust coming out of vintage clothing, usually clothes from the 50s and 60s. You know, the dust that happens when certain materials are old and start disintegrating. Often it's a polyester of some sort in the lining, sometimes in boots or shoes too. I doubt it's very healthy to breathe the stuff. But, you can usually see or feel it- always check the garment by shaking or rubbing it- if you don't see any dust it's fine. I just don't buy anything with the dust- I don't think there is any repair for the situation.

As pointed out variously above, the modern world has its dangers. Our seas and air are polluted, there are few absolutely 'safe' fabrics, materials etc. Leather is treated with poisons to prevent bacterial or fungal decay. Artificial fibres break down to dust which can cause asthma attacks and kill sea life, fence posts and decking are injected with poisons to prevent rot. Smoking meat and fish laces them with carcinogens etc etc etc. In short life is risky so if you're not going to have sleepless nights and worry filled days you need to do the occasional risk assessment keep risks to a sensible level and behave accordingly and safely, eg don't eat too much smoked or salted food, don't use decking off- cuts on your barbecue, wear personal protective equipment when sanding drilling spraying and so on.

Wearing the odd polyester garment will therefore not significantly add to the risk level posed by living in a developed country and moving to an undeveloped country is probably even more scary - read the newspapers!
In spite of the above we live longer and healthier lives than ever before so do the risk assessment embrace life and enjoy it!

I once bought a crimplene bowling shirt from Aero's shop in Battersea. It bore the legend "Regal Inn, Wichita Kansas" In a sort of German script. A great looking shirt but it really made me sweat. Only wore it once
