ISO info on US/Italian diplomatic relations

My mom just got back from visiting the last surviving family member from her mother's generation. The latest bit of info that she got was that one of her uncles was the Italian consulate during WWII. No one seems to have any specific details on him. It looks like the US didn't have formal diplomatic relations with Italy during the war, so it's beginning to sound like it might not have been true.

From September 9, 1943, when Italy agreed to the armistice, there would have been the need for consulate members. When Il Duce was forced into "retirement" the monarchy took over. They would have diplomatic relations with the US very soon after that date.
