Last night I went down to the Riverwalk here in San Antonio. I did not have the express intention of going to The Landing, but ended up there as I often have over the last twenty years.
Since I was seventeen, I've been going to The Landing to hear the sounds of The Jim Cullum Jazz Band. Actually, I don't recall ever having made it my intended destination, but as I make my way along the river, it's almost impossible not to drift in once hearing either the JCJB on the stage inside, or the combo playing out on the patio.
Here are a couple of links...

I can't impress upon you enough: if you come to San Antonio, you MUST go to The Landing. The band itself is incredible, and there's never a shortage of music history lessons between tunes. The space itself is quite close; a ground floor and balcony overlooking the stage, both packed with little tables that look like 78's. There's no dance floor: you go to The Landing to hear the music. Even the talking is kept to a minimal whisper for the most part.
The drinks, I have to admit, are on the pricey side, but well worth it once everything is put in perspective. Last night I had two Hurricanes and a piece of cheesecake ( I know... I'd been in the bottle since 2pm and hit The Landing at about 9:30 or 10. It seemed like a good combination at the time. ) and the bill came to $35 before tip. I don't believe I've ever looked at an itemized bill, but I guess there's a cover in there.
When I was younger, when I first started going, I was underage. The lady at the door would let me in if I promised to buy a couple of Cokes. These I always paid for as they came, so I know I wasn't being charged a cover. The point is, the service is good, and both the staff and band want you to have a good time. They want you to leave having had an experience. Jim Cullum doesn't suffer rowdies, and I've seen him call people out in the middle of a tune if he thinks they're distracting other patrons.
This is one of those things that has been a part of my life for some time, obviously, and I've always kinda taken it for granted. Sometimes going in five or six times over the course of the year, possibly more. Sometimes maybe only once. Last night though, I watched Jim Cullum and realized it was really time to start soaking this in. He's not getting any younger, as they say. I don't want to take such an institution lightly anymore. That's why the lengthy post. Please take a look at the links, and follow their links, in turn. If you're ever in San Antonio, visit The Landing. You won't be disappointed.

My local jazz station is out of Phillt, WRTI, it's the Temple radio station. They carry Riverwalk every Sunday and I've heard some great music on the program.
