Knox Fifth Avenue

I was recently visiting relatives in Cleveland and found this hat in a house my sister had recently bought, with furnishings. She kindly let me keep it.

I couldn't examine it at the time, but now that I've gotten it home and put my reading glasses on I see that it is a Knox Fifth Avenue, stamped Luxor on the front of the sweat band. It's exactly my size, I usually take a 7-3/8LO. Although the label doesn't say Long Oval I think it is because of the way it fits and due to the fact that the previous owner had stuffed cleanex inside the sweatband at the front.

It's a dark slate gray that will go perfectly with my vintage navy blue british warm overcoat. I had been planning a trip to Optimo in Chicago in two weeks and now I plan to take it along for cleaning and a new sweatband and possilbly a liner. This is my first vintage hat so please warn me if restoring it is not a good idea. Unless it's restored it really wouldn't be wearable, the sweat band is very delicate and tears very easily.

By the way, the brim appears to be 2-3/8, the ribbon is 1-7/8 wide and the crown seems to be about 4-1/2.

Wow. What a great find. :eusa_clap With the hats you buy on Ebay, you never know where they came from, but with this one, there is some real history attached to it, at least a place that you know of.

That looks like a VERY old and very fine Knox. Wonderful for you that you obtained it and that it fits. It is a shame when the sweatbands deteriorate. I absolutely hate to remove the originals with the branding and in your case embossing. But when they are crumbling, whatcha' gonna' do? Optimo will take good care of you and that fantastic fedora. :eusa_clap

Three weeks after a trip to Optimo - a new liner, sweat band and ribbon, cleaned, re-blocked and slightly re-sized:
