Any one here have a collection of LIFE from the early 40's to say 46 or so?

These to me give a real feel to the period. I love old LIFE mags!

This one I have in my collection. It's from the 26th of July 1943 and has the 8th air force pictured on the cover. It has some really cool photos and color drawings of B-17's in side. Tells the story about the 8th.

A must have for the WWII AAF collector!

I like you, would love to have some YANK stuff. There used to be some PDF's on the Stars and Stripes archive site, but last time I checked I couldn't find 'em.

Life is great...I've got some from the era, talk about a trip. I've also got some Scientific Americans and some Reader's Digests.

The Reader's Digests are the best...especially with the humor in uniform.

Thanks for the link, whatta site! I've always been cautious about posting pics if only for the copyright issues....guess it falls under education?

Any ideas on that? I've got the complete run of the American magazine from about 32-58 and I was thinking about posting up some images, but just want to do the right think as far as copyright. I tried tracking down the publisher, but they sold out to some comglomerate...who never emailed me back!

I mean http://www.plan59.com posts up pics of ads, but I never thought they were in the public domain...

Maybe I'm just too cautious?????

I've been collecting Life for years. But, over the last 6 months I have purchased three large lots of them, two of which were library discards. I now have at least 70 percent of all the issues from 1936 to 1969.

These are like a time machine! Over the past few evenings, I've been looking over the issues from 1941. I think the magazine may have reached its peak that year. There are articles about situations leading us into the war, articles about everyday life and, of course, the great ads.

For the era prior to 1936, the Pictorial Review comes closest to what could later be found in Life. Pictorial Review is a much thinner magazine than Life, and it's printed on newsprint so it is pretty fragile now. I believe Pictorial Review started in 1914 as a means of covering the war in Europe. It's great for WWI and 1920s fans.

I have the first issue of lIfe, from 1937. My grandmother had saved it. I also have bound volumes of Leatherneck Magazine, the magazine of the Marines, from 1944 and 1945. It was considered the best American magazine during those years, and it's full of great stuff.

I'm not quite sure what the copyright issue is on this. Anyone else know?
