I would think that this German singer has been mentioned here a few times already, but I think he and his Palast-Orchester deserve another mention. They do classic "Comedian Harmonists"-style ca. 1930 dance/show music.

The Comedian Harmonists were heavily influenced by U.S. hot pop music and jazz, with the influence of early Mills Brothers being particularly strong in many of their recordings.

Their success continued into the early 1930s, but they eventually ran into trouble with the newly-risen Nazi regime. Half the group members -- Frommermann, Collin, and Cycowski -- were either Jewish or of Jewish descent, and Bootz had a Jewish wife. Initially they were only forbidden from performing pieces by Jewish composers. Eventually, though, they were officially banned from performing in public. They gave their last concert in Munich on March 25, 1934. The three Jewish members subsequently fled Germany. The remaining members then replaced their counterparts and performed as separate groups, but were never able to regain their original success.

A search here turned up no youtube links, so here goes:

Oops I did it again Maybe their best work :p

Super Trouper(Horrible sound and no images on this one, but if you haven't heard their version, it's a hoot.)

Sex Bomb

Upside Down

Daisy (big show number - great chorus girls)

Schiess den Ball ins Tor (This is their football song for the World Cup, or the like.)

Amalie geht mit 'nem Gummikavalier...

Viagra

Ich lass' mir meinen Körper schwarz bepinseln...

Ein Freund, ein guter Freund

Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus

Ich suche eine, die mir alleine gehört

Klonen kann sich lohnen

In Der Bar Zum Krokodil

In einer kleinen Konditorei

A medley

And another.

Yes, his music is excellent (as are his postures).

If you like that even though you don't understand German, chances are Czech won't bother you much either, so have a look at Mr Ondřej Havelka.

That was my annoying ring-tone for quite some time...

Oh, I do speak German, as many Norwegians do, but the Havelka stuff is fantastic. Thanks!

I just saw Max Raabe and his orchestra tonight in New Jersey. What an amazing show. I was expecting the novelty songs, but they played none. It was 100% authentic 20's-30's dance band music, and I loved it.

Tonight or Never.

"Heute Nacht Oder Nei" is their double CD live from Carnegie Hall and it is absolutely fabulous, a stunning recording ofr the 1920's-30's German Music Hall Cabaret experience.

Worth every penny and sounds great too, excellent recording by the producer and mixer.

I am hoping they will return to the US soon, I'd love to see them.

Last month, Raabe did some solo shows at the Neue Gallerie in Manhattan.

I was tempted to attend, but the price was too steep.

I just discovered him and he´s pure genius!
Even his dance remixes are great, and that´s one of the things I thought I´ll never say.

Once again, the loungers found something awesome for me :)

I love him!

Ruby Rocket performed to his version of "Let's Talk About Sex" by Salt 'n Peppa at the Spring Swing Burlesque Review in Dallas this year and it was AMAZING!

I really like his stuff-- his voice is perfect.

And he's coming to my town Oakland!

Listed as San Francisco on their website, which is confusing.

Being presented by SF Jazz, tickets go one sale January 10th.

BUT SEE THE THREAD IN EVENTS if you want to join my birthday group... and get back to me before 2 pm tomorrow to get my massive discount price.

Another delight from Old Berlin

Moin, Moin from Texas!
If you like Max' music and the Golden entertainment of the 1920s, you might like Brendan McNally's dark comic novel "Germania" (Simon & Schuster, 2009), about the Flying Magical Loerber Brothers, four somewhat magical, Jewish vaudeville entertainers and onetime child stars who were the toast of Berlin before WWII and who reunite during the surreal, three-week "Flensburg Reich" of Admiral Doenitz, Hitler's very unlucky successor.

Tonight's show at Carnegie Hall was just great. Ms. Skyvue and I had fourth row center seats and Mike was just a few seats away in the second row.

Just amazing showmanship and musicianship. A memorable night all the way around. They even did an (unacknowledged) Comedian Harmonists tribute.
