I haven't read all of the posts in this thread, and it may have been mentioned above, but there is a practical reason musicians wear hats: The overhead lights on a stage are bright. Bright enough that they can be distracting. A hat with a brim eliminates this distraction.

He really is underrated I think. With Marty Stuart they play some instrumentals to showcase him a bit, I think.
It's the frustrated songwriter in me that makes me notice fitting lyrics.

I got to meet Mr Edwards a few years ago at Red Stegalls Cowboy Gathering. Both he and Mr. Stegall were very nice to visit with.
