My Wedding Photos Are In!

So, my wife and I had been planning on having an elegant church wedding next year, with myself in white tie and groomsmen in dinner jackets. However, being a Jew who was raised Catholic, some familial objections to the union resulted in battle lines being drawn, and ultimately we went ahead with a small civil ceremony. Nevertheless, it all went off without a hitch-- and with everyone looking sharp, too. For myself and my groomsman/brother, I took inspiration from the 1940s, and more specifically my grandfather's wedding photo, updating the look by replacing white flannels with cream trousers. My wife picked out her dress based on photos of Victorian women that she fell in love with during a Sociology class covering Victorian culture.

Outside the wedding party, we let people individualize. My brother's girlfriend dressed up her always classy roaring-20s-meets-neo-beatnik look, while Dad injected some color into the menswear with a vintage blazer and geometric tie.

Of course, hats had to show up at one point. I can't recall ever seeing my dad in a lid; being short led my brother to favor stingy brims, and living in Oklahoma led him to favor straw. For his own hat distaste, dad did get me the groovy panama, which I'd been wanting; although the brim's much larger than to what I'm accustomed, I think it added the right touch of formality.

And, just to show off the braces

The whole Jewish / Catholic / familial objections reminded me of a couple that I met in college. Young Catholic boy meets nice "Holy Roller" girl at work, romance ensues, marriage is contemplated. "Holy Roller" being HER description not mine. If memory serves, the Priest wouldn't let a Holy Roller in the chuch, and the pastor of the other church (holy roller is a bit general) wouldn't let a Catholic near the altar. The couple got married in the first row of the "Holy Roller" Church. I bet they're still married. :)

Very nice! Your blushing bride is lovely too. Mazel tov.

Don't feel bad about the family crapola...my grandmother refused to attend my first wedding to a nice Lutheran girl, and never even bothered to meet my 2nd wife...and I didn't go to my grandmother's funeral, thought it would be hypocritical to pay respects to a woman I didn't particularly care for...
