It would be good to see the arm and shoulder reinforcements added,it might then look more practical. Also its hard to tell but it looks slightly long(?)

Isn't the 1980s reference due to the fact that there was a 30s fashion revival through until the middle of them? A bit too young to remember it clearly, but I do recall wearing some very short jackets, high-waisted trousers and bold pattern ties to a couple of weddings around 1985/86! As I've said elsewhere, I'm of the opinion that as long as you're the right shape, any jacket can look good if it's worn with confidence [huh]. Context, schmontext, it's about attitude.

Yeah, I kind of remember Bowie going through a fedora phase in the 80's, and Gary Numan got off his Thunderbirds trip, and started being all film noir- raincoats and fedoras. And of course, there was Ian Curtis.



It is all about attitude. There are days when I'm in a rotten mood, and just want to wear jeans and a sweatshirt. Then there are days when I feel like I'm THE man!

The 30's and 20's were bigger in the 1970's I recall. Big 70's films like Paper Moon , The Sting and The Great Gatsby rode and buoyed that period. The fedora thing has always been popular with certain groups. It's not always been done for the sake of retro.

I suspect Bowie's Fedora owes more to 1950's Beat figure William Borroughs than anything. And Quinten Crisp.

You're absolutely right about the 70s, Annie Hall has a lot answer for! It's odd that it was resurrected so quickly in the UK - Depeche Mode and Spandau Ballet all ran around in braces and trilbies. Good point about Burroughs and Bowie, though I think the trilby was all part of his 30s Berlin look.
