I'm not too keen on the style of pics either, but I figure it's got to be better than black & white ones! :D
I'm predicting the price of "1940's Hairstyles" will drop severly in the next few months...
I wish I had a bit more in my PayPal account so I could order... please buy my stuff on eBay!!! lol

We (Lolita, Dixie and I) were approached at Viva Las Vegas to sign up for an advanced copy...and I saw the book.. it's neat. But it has the "I got printed at Kinko's" look to it. I am not sure what they are charging everyone.. but personally I think it is overpriced for what you get.

I would still like to browse through it though...

Hi ladies - I got my copy today and I can't wait to give a few of the styles a try. I think it will be perfect for me, as I have no idea how to style my own hair and the instructions are simple to follow. Also, I like the fact that there are pictures of each hair model w/ straight unstyled hair before each style - that helps me alot. I always see the final style and figure everyone must have easier hair to work with than I do - but I'm more inspired now to give it a go.

Well I haven't gotten all the way through yet, and some of the instructions are very detailed and good, such as those for fingerwaving and for setting an S wave using pincurls.

Unfortunately, there are a few major things lacking that I would've really liked to see in this book.

* no mention at all that few of these styles will really work well unless you have layers cut into your hair. In my opinion, that is the most important aspect of vintage hairstyling. It doesn't matter how well you set you hair, or how great a stylist you are - having layers makes ALL the difference in your styles.

* little mention of setting lotion as a tool for curling. Some talk of it in the pincurling section, but no mention of it as a valuable styling aid for hot roller sets.

* almost no styles with bangs (something I'd hoped for more of, since I have bangs)

* only a couple of short styles. (something else I'd hoped for more of)

* almost all styles featured are 1940s. This book was advertised as 30s-50s and I was really hoping to see more 50s styles!

* does not talk about dry sets at all, unless they are hot roller sets or sets with heat. I know many gals here, myself included, have found better results with cold dry sets than wet sets.

* would have liked to see a more detailed accessories section with some better instructions for making your own.

* lipstick instructions in the back are just downright terrible.

In her bibliography in the back, she has a section for websites she used. She really should have just come to hang out here at the FL for a couple of months!

Kinkos is a local copy print shop. I think she meant that the print quality doesn't look all that great.

I picked up my copy yesterday at the vintage fashion expo. I am quite pleased with the book for only 29.95 I think it is pretty good. The author was there and also gave a demonstration, she was quite sweet. I think the idea behind to book is to teach the basics so you can put into place your own ideas by creating your own style. I asked her which type of setting lotion she likes and she uses Redken shaping lotion.

I do really appreciate the fingerwave instructions, although I haven't really scoured other instructions, I find her's very clear.

Thanks again to Sari for posting and thanks to Snookie for letting me know she was at the expo.
