Original leather jacket painting material !

Of the original WWII leather jackets that had insignias or squadrons painted.
What was the material or paint that was used back then ? Enamel ? Thanks.

I have read from wartime artists they used anything they could lay their hands on...often going to the corrosion shop to get aircraft paint, motorpool for vehicle paint, you get the idea. I imagine as the war progressed and artists became known, more had the chance to make/turn a profit.
Depending on theater of operations, local markets could supply painting materials.
