There isn't a hole in the buckle end to facilitate the tang. Are there holes on the corresponding side of the belt?

I keep thinking that isn't supposed to have a buckle. Not sure how it works, but it looks meant to be without one.

It would need a "friction" buckle, rather than a prong/tang buckle,
as there are no holes. Take the prong off a leather covered buckle and
might be OK.

I think if there -was- a buckle...it was a pull through..with no metal bits...

But if that were the case....that means either the end that is doubled over was -unsewn- and the buckle removed and then it was resewn.....

or its got loose and a hanging edge somewhere, which I cant see in the pictures.

I still vote for 'it tied in a knot' or it passed through the small loop and that was it.

I agree, it looks as if there never was a buckle. Did they ever use D-rings for this type of belt?

I bet it was meant to have the look of a buckle/loop, but be tied
off casually, like a bathrobe. We've seen so many shots of overcoats
from that period tied off like that. Stylin'.

I strongly reckon that the belt once had a friction buckle, but the buckle's center rod broke off at one point, freeing it from the fabric loop. Lord knows how the break occurred.

I'll bet you can find a buckle that will fit, but will have to have it resewn.

My suggestion would be to tie it off as suggested, or, as I don't really like belts on jackets, just remove it.

GWD ... please, please, please do not remove the belt. Doing so would mean that you'd also have to cut off the belt loops. (They'd look silly just sitting there without a belt to support.) That's too much unnecessary surgery for such a fine coat.


Fact is, your coat was meant to be worn belted. Taking off the belt and loops would seriously mess up the coat's design.

I have no intention of going beltless. It's too short to tie in a knot though. I only wish I knew what was there originally. Paddy gave me a great link for the leather covered buckles, I'm going to give them a call soon.
