Penney's 50s horsehide jacket

Picked up recently, size 46, unworn condition. Any information most appreciated.

You already know it is from the 1950s. I've not seen this exact label script, so interesting. This is the common 50s Penney label, the addition of Made in the West was also seen on some garments.

the question to me; Who in the West? Other makers used labels with "styled and made in California". I believe Penney only says made in the West. To me, this means other than California.

I have a theory on a possible maker. When you get the jacket I would need a picture of the epaulets

Thanks. Ruled out a couple of makers.

American Sportswear was in Utah during the 50s. I suspect them of making one of my JC penney, out west jackets. Seattle Woolen was also "out west". Outside of California these are the only two western makers I am aware of.

Always a surprise when a mint leather jacket 60-80 years old looks like new. I did not recognize the label because it is so pristine.

While answering this question, I answered one of my own.

This is another JC Penney jacket, made in the West. Now I recognize the Steerhide label as one used by California Sportswear Company. This was a high quality jacket. Now I understand why it was so nice! The other two were less quality.
