Thanks for the links! This is going to be sooo good! Looks like they've done some more casting. I love Giovanni Ribisi, he'll be great as Karpis! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1152836/
Johnny Depp as Dillenger in new "Public Enemies" Is anyone excited to hear about the new movie in production, Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp as John Dillenger? Some locals have caught a few pictures of the production location in Wisconsin: The movie will also star Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff. The producer is Michael Mann, recently of "The Aviator". Release date is set for 2009.
Sounds interesting. While I like Johnny Depp, I'm more excited to hear Christian Bale is going to be in the film. I think he's an excellent actor. I loved 3:10 to Yuma. Anybody else think the 20-round box magazines in the Thompsons look weird? I strongly associate the 50-round drum with the gangster era. The box magazines look very WWII. -Dave
I see your point about the box mags. The drum magazine has become synonymous with the old Chicago Typewriter. Funny part is, the 20rd box mags were probably much more commonly used is real life. It's pretty easy to stash a couple of extra mags in a jacket pocket, much easier than a drum! Also that drum weighs a ton when filled with 50 rounds of .45 ACP ammo. Looking forward to this movie! My wife is a HUGE Johnny Depp fan!
Christian Bale. Great. More whispering-as-acting. Looks like this will be a fun movie anyway. Lots of good stuff on the horizon, in fact.
Michael Mann sells it for me. I just watched Heat again last weekend, and it's very intense. Also, his Hannibal Lecter movie is still my favorite, if a bit dated.
Depp's a great actor, but just seems all wrong for Dillinger...Dillinger himself actually had movie-star looks, but with a square-jawed, muscular appearance that I just can't imagine is going to come across with Depp...Depp's features are too delicate. I'm really hoping this is going to be historically accurate and not another Hollywood drama job.
I'm really looking forward to this movie (though not b/c of Depp or Bale!) My grandma would always tell us about the time she met Dillinger- and lived. She was about 4-6 at the time. Her parents had been driving down a backroad in Minnesota. Their car either stalled and blocked another oncoming car, or got stuck in front of another car. Well, her parents and the passengers in the other car, who looked a bit harried, got out. The people from the other car acted suspiciously and at least one had a gun. There was a brief shouting altercation, but no violence. Then everyone got back in their respective vehicles and drove off. Later that night, her parents learned that Dillinger had been on the run, and taken that very road during that very time frame.
If they were going to cast the movie on looks alone, a younger Christopher Guest would have fit the bill nicely.
Been trying... I've actually been hoping to touch base and try to fall in for extra work. But my work schedule isn't helping.... Neither is the snow!!! Rats!!!
Hey All, AlanC reposted some pics & info for me in this thread http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=29234 while I was awaiting approval, now that I got the green light, here I am! To add on to that, they are redoing our downtown as we speak and should be shooting some scenes here in the next couple of weeks. Basically, everyone in town tried to be an extra, my friend got uber lucky and was picked to be a "super" extra, I'm still waiting for my call back Brian
That's a vague yet attention-arresting statement, Scotrace. Care to expound a little on what you are refering to?
Dillinger's grave and tombstone http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=283 The large stone is the family name and the individual family members are nearby: his mom (died when John was only 3 or 4), his dad, his step-mom, John, and his sister. His headstone has been replaced several times due to souvenir hunters chipping away at it. I remember when his sister died around 1987. Her name was Audrey Dillinger Hancock, and she was 98. She was still living in the same house on the southwest side of Indy in a neighborhood called Maywood. That house held the funeral for John in which 10,000 people passed through to "pay their respects." FBI agents were hiding in nearby houses watching for still at large gang members to drop by but none did.
Coming up: Indiana Jones 4 Leatherheads Mrs. Pettigrew Lives For a Day Dillenger Should be some visual treats, if nothing else.
They were filming in Crown Point which is maybe 2 hours from me. I really wish I would have know that. I would have loved to go and check it out. Maybe dressed in period costume would have won me a better view?
