Schott Steerhide softness after breaking in

Bought a brand new steer hide and returned due to its extreme stiffness. Then got this 6 years old , seemingly very 9/10 condition 613S. What a difference! I never knew Schott’s steer hide could be this soft. Softer than my 3 month old Aero Vincenzo HH . Almost as soft as my lamb skin jacket. Is this the same case Schott steer hide owners? Or just this steer hide l got is an exceptionally soft pile?

It’s how most Schotts work actually. So the 118 amongst a few other models have no finish/top coat on them so they tend to be a bit softer and pliable right away. But Schott is notorious for having a lot of top coat that sometimes almost makes the jackets look like plastic. Some love that look, some despise it. But if you actually wear them and stick with it most develop great patina, creases and softness. The top coat has to wear away, sink in, wash off and heat up over the years or hard wear.

I am very interested in how this plays out. I have been chasing a Schott 118 as my grail jacket because of the naked cowhide and fit. I have avoided the Schott steer for a concern of it being too stiff., this may expand my parameters.

If memory serves me correctly Schott started using the Arrow care tag after 2008. Before that they used the Leathercraft tag, So depending on that would help you determine the year.

edit. So your 5th number is a 6, if it has a Leathercraft label then it is most likely a 2006.

How can l tell if mine is Arrow care or leather craft tag?

It is a tag sewn inside the jacket , usually below the armhole. Unless someone removed it then that poses a more difficult situation determining what year it is.
Care label doesn’t say Arrow nor leathercare. Buckle back has Schott on it

At this point I am going to tap out as your jacket goes beyond what I know. I am wondering if yours is a European or Japanese market version.

Here is an Arrow tag as a reference.

If you like thicker leather with a "soft" hand or feel, you could look up Fox Creek Leathers, they use primarily "naked cowhide" which has these traits.
Thier prices are generally reasonable.
It's not my personal preferance, but to those who enjoy it this may be an inexpensive option.

Update on this question. I just got my Schott 118 that was built in 2018 and it has the same inside tag as yours and the Schott logo on the buckle. Gonna say yours is a 2016 with some confidence.
