Below is my favorite overcoat. It's British, no label, and the construction and quality point toward the 1930s. A Donegal herringbone tweed -- dig those colorful flecks! Plain back.

And here's one from a local Goodwill. From the later 1930s, I reckon. The wool has heathery variations of Fall colors, hard to pick up in the photos. It has the weight, density and slightly fuzzy texture of a horse blanket. Plain back, no half-belt.
