Magnoli is well aware of my problems and I in fact linked him to my initial post in here. He said that it would take a couple weeks to get it done and back to me, which I cannot do. Nonetheless, I don't blame him for the ill fitting pants. I should've just added another inch or two to my waist but I just used whatever my tailor measured me as. I put a bit too much trust in my tailor because he did charge me $35 just for getting measured. There were other places to get measured, but his place was one of the better places reviewed and he actually spoke coherent English.

-No, one leg isn't shorter than the other. Could just be the shoe is resting in a different position on my shoe. The picture of the drape from the back is looser because I did not button it. I just thought that it would more or less the be same as the front.

Just wanted to be sure they know you're having them altered.
Has the tailor who measured you ever done any alterations or made any clothes for you before? You shouldn't need to adjust your measurements to get the clothes to fit.
Also, just out of personal curiosity is the inseam of the pants what the tailor said your waist size is?

I'm not sure if my tailor actually makes alterations. I shouldn't even say "my tailor" to be honest, I only went to this man once, which was to get measured. There is a place right next to it called San Francisco Tailors that does the alternations it seems.

From what I can recall, most of what the tailor wrote for my measurements was foreign to me, so I just directly copied whatever he wrote for me to Magnoli. I'm pretty sure my tailor specifically wrote my waist as 34" because I put that in for a waist measurement at Magnoli's site for my personal account garment measurements.

Here are the pictures. It was a bit hard to find good places to put them for self timer but if you need better ones let me know. I think these illustrate just how long these pants are. I'm wearing them a bit below my belly button the whole time, as far as my crotch permits. And if you notice, I didn't button up my button fly. I can only either hook my pants or button a few and somewhat be able to breathe or sit. Can't have both at the same time.

That is a great suit. Too bad you can't make it a few miles up I80. I have an incredible tailor here who could make the suit look as though it was custom made for you.

Thank you for the compliment Bugsy. Unfortunately, I don't wish to drive that far, nor do I think I'm even capable of doing so since I'm a new teenage driver. I'll keep reading around here for anyone that leaves comments or words of advice, but I'll be going to the tailor in downtown this Thursday. I hope it won't put that big of a dent in my already dented wallet. And that it can be fixed properly and on time.


Hopefully I can post up some proper pictures soon. I intended on wearing a red striped tie, white pocket square, and red carnation on my lapel for my formal event. Pretty cookie cutter look.

In later years, Austin Reed was sold heavily in the US ('70s-'90s, at least). I don't know if that brand was sold in the US in 1954 or not.

Austin Reed was of course an upper-middle range menswear store. Quite a ways above Burton, but if you had cash you wouldn't shop there. Lots of junior level officers and climbing through the ranks career soldiers, who couldn't afford Savile Row would shop at Austin Reed for their uniforms and all the kit they'd need for the tropics from Reed's "Colonial Department". It has, like everything else, come down in the world.

There is a famous incident that was a real scoop for Filene's. Austin Reed had a shop on the Queen Mary. When it got stranded in New York at the outbreak of war, Filene's bought the whole stock at rock bottom prices. So at least some Austin Reed goods - especially the Sea Island cotton shirts, apparently - were sold in the US in the early 1940s. I suspect not much more than the Filene's stock, though.

Anyone interested in Austin Reed i'd suggest getting the book A Touch of Class: The Story of Austin Reed by Berry Ritchie. Quite a good read for the early years.

Its an Austin Reed from 1954, and it does have two back pockets. I actually never noticed that before you mentioned it (I don't really use back pockets...).

That is unusual for UK at that time: One wonders if it was a model solely for the US Market.

Gents thanks for the information and the discussion (and for making me realize my trousers had two back pockets!!:eusa_doh: Not sure how I missed that...). I got it from the UK actually so I'm not sure it was made for the US market. Unless it traveled back across the pond sometime in the past 50 years (only to cross it again!). If you guys want I'll take a photo of the label tomorrow.

I just bought an early 50s Burton's suit with 2 rear pockets. Both buttoned, and certainly British made for British sale. 2 rear pockets was always an option for Burton's suits (according to their catalogues). It seems it just wasn't very popular.

No doubt about it; those trousers are waaay too long and too tight in the waist. Get a tailor (or just a seamstress) to shorten them and let out the waist for your upcoming event. Magnoli can make adjustments later, when you have time.

Same with the coat; have a tailor (or seamstress) move the buttons so it will be comfortable for your upcoming event. Later, Magnoli can make it right for you.

Moving the buttons will give you a looser fit without truly altering the coat. Unless you plan to where it unbuttoned all night long, you should have them moved. While most probably wouldn't realise that your jacket was too small, they probably WILL sense that something is off with it. Also, if your suit isn't comfortable, neither will you be, you'll be fussing and fighting with it all night long.

I've seen some movies with James Cagney and George Raft where the Jackets also seemed to fit too tight. So if altering would be too expensive you could say you're goin for the Gangster look

Just some updates. I just came back from downtown. The tailor I went to had a nice set up, under the name of Andreas Gorges Tailor. The man who helped me was a soft spoken man named Andy and only took a couple minutes to fix my waist for the pants. I cannot say how great his tailoring was in terms of skill since I know nothing about it, but they fit A LOT better. He is in the process of shortening the pant length and I will go back to pick it up next Tuesday for $45. He is shortening them by the same amount as one cuff on the bottom.

Oh, and it turned out that the jacket seemed tight on me because apparently I buttoned it wrong? I don't know what he did but he buttoned something on the inside first then the outside. Again, I'm a novice.

Tie: "Palm Beach" of course. Miss 1940s is wearing a beautiful mid 30s cream Haspel suit with a pleated back.

That has to be the most sedate Palm Beach tie I have ever seen. Usually they have crazy prints of fish, palm trees, etc.
What about the shoes? They look like that pair of size 12s I have.

Well, I have a few 40s palm beach that have zany prints, but they did a good many stripes. Most of the ones I've seen (that I've bought) are very tasteful.

The shoes are the vintage Nunn Bush's I've had since 2000. Perfect size 12D. Wish they all fit like that pair.
