I was thinking the same thing. When you untie the tie, the knotted area looks like it needs a good pressing. lol lol lol
What do you expect for a buck in 1939?:

Your one dollar tie from back then was cheap. Your five dollar tie was pretty good and over five bucks for a tie was a well constructed tie that wouldn't crush.

I just got in the 20th Century Neckties Pre-1955 book by Roseann Ettinger. It has plenty of photos with some pretty old prices for the ties pictured. I would likely buy a few of them for what she prices them.
Perhaps a lot has changed since 1998.
I highly recommend it just for the pictures so you can get an idea of what the ties look like from the eras listed.
