I must get Ben Stephens to post the 1930s Charvet tie I pointed him at in a vintage shop. Really a very nice tie IIRC.

A couple that I wore at the weekend. A satin Van Heusen Van Splendor with a printed oranges pattern.

And as promised another of those rare bold British numbers. Not many British ties come around with this kind of pattern … No labels.

Also this recent, VERY rare, purchase. Randolph Turpin, known by the amazing nickname of "The Leamington Larruper" (he was from Leamington Spa), became world middleweight champion - and instant, massive, though brief, celebrity - by beating Sugar Ray Robinson on July 10th 1951 in London. The fights are on youtube. he was a very interesting and very unconventional boxer. The picture on the tie sums up his style perfectly - very pronounced bobbing and widespread foot placement. The American commentators describe it as "jack in the box" or "10 cent jumping monkey" style (I assume some kind of toy available at the time). It's probable that this tie dates from shortly afterwards, as he lost his title in the rematch with Robinson in New York on 12th September 1951. This gives about 2 months for this tie to be on the market stalls and "current".

My idea of vintage ties revolves around old Pancaldi and and some French thing that starts with an "L" that I can't remem--wait, it's Lanvin (if I spelled that right). I did find this, though, and was curious...was it common place to put pin-up girls on the backs of ties (this one labeled "Bubbles")?

Before eBay existed, these vintage 1950s 'hidden girlie' ties were thought to be rare, and fetched high prices. Today, eBay has shown us that they're not nearly as rare as we'd thought, and the prices have plummeted.
