...Paypal also has some built in protections which I have yet to use so I am unsure how well they work.

Speaking form experience. Paypal safety precautions are great (their customer service is lacking however). I bid and on an ebay action for a mickey mouse TV and DVD player. all I received was the DVD player. when I contacted the seller they told me that the description said DVD player only. It was changed. I contacted Paypal and they said to send the item back to the seller. Once they received it (with post office confirmation) Paypal refunded my money.

I think I'm just going to chalk this one up t a learning experience and take another look at the Chatham that I was originally looking at.

Chatham looks like a nice hat (I've only seen the online pics). If you wanted the bound brim, also check out the new Whippet (one Member here mentioned it was nearly the same as a Chatham, but with the bound brim). Also, for the best price I've heard of on the Whippet, try the Stetson Outlet store. If they have your size and color, you won't beat the price.

On your eBay transaction, sounds like you are where you need to be at this point. There are GREAT protections available there (eBay in the last year or so has done a GREAT job with buyer protection). But there are time limits. You didn't realize in time from the sounds of it, that your item was "not as described". Too bad, but like you said, experience.

Don't write off eBay either, just be sure in the future to verify the item's accuracy as soon after arrival as possible. When an item comes in now, I'll wait a day or two to write feeback, and make certain it looks and performs as advertised. If not, I contact the Seller right away. I keep in mind what my limits from eBay are for filing a claim, and make sure the Seller has resolved the issue to my satisfaction prior to my deadline, or I will simply file with eBay. I've actually had to file twice (item not delivered in either case, one was not shipped, the other lost in the mail- told that Seller to wait another week or two to see if it showed up when he initially offered a refund-my mistake- he then decided he didn't want to offer the refund! That was on a 100+ year old razor BTW, and I'd still love to see it show, it was a beaut).

Only other time I almost filed was when a Seller in Canada tried to jack up the shipping something like $12 more than he'd quoted me before the bid. He reluctantly decided to honor his initial quote. In the first two cases, eBay did refund my money including shipping.

I've got a few I've been looking at: Stetson Chatham, Packard, Ashland, Dobbs Temptation, Christy's Foldaway, and the Akubra Casual.
Thanks all for the words of advice. I think I was wanting to vent more than anything.
T Rick...I recognize that name from B&B.
