Should I wear this hat or keep it as a collector's item?

  1. The 5X CB was the Thirty-Five & the 7X CB was the Fifty.
    I recall reading "un-dyed pure beaver fur". Probably will always remain a mystery.

    It's possible that like so many of these hat terms, "clear beaver" meant one thing in 1935 and had drifted to a very different definition by 1955.

    It does seem that most Loungers would agree that any hat with the designation was made exclusively of beaver fur. Whether it was all belly fur or undyed may not be quite so certain in all cases. Although that does sound like a great reason for creating the term (otherwise, why not just "pure beaver"?).

    One other certainty is that everyone on the Lounge would love to have a clear beaver hat, as long as it fits.

    HA......great info.....I learn something every day on here.....lol..........so a 25, would that be a $25.00 hat?

  5. Correct. Check out the Miller-Stockman catalog thread.
    3x/15 = $15
    20 = $20
    25 = $25
    4X = $30
    5X CB/35 = $35
    7X CB/50 = $50

    Here’s another 40s 5X Clear Beaver, another nearly instant eBay BIN from a while back. If the 7X CBs mold like clay, this 5X CB is thinner, finer, and molds like butter.

    This one came and went with an eBay seller over in Japan. I did not win it, but it’s a feast for the eyes.

    Found a hens tooth! This is the first time I bought a used hat that, I think, would benefit from a proper cleaning. While it’s there, I’m going to see if it can be bumped a size, too. Better felt then my two 7XCBs, hands down. 52 block 6x3:

    Wow! A great hat!

    And a very nice National Recovery Act tag there. 1933-1935. Pretty good identifier.

    Thanks all, it is a great hat.

    interesting, I had it pegged on late 30s with the size tag but will have to check out the NRA reference too

  20. Wowza! Great find Ross!

    Not sure why you would bump it up ... it's already my size. :rolleyes:
