The BORSALINO BROTHERHOOD

Borsalino GIGIASGU (read correctly?) completely in black
size 6 1/2 Punti - again on the separate size stamp
brim 5,5 cm; ribbon 4,8 cm; crown 11,0 cm dent/14,5 cm open
The felt is very soft, very easy to mold and you feel like the coming
spring storms could deform it right when you wear it...
The dimensions do match the other gray Gigiasgu I showed the other day,
but it's obviously a completely different model, because that was a Homburg.
Maybe I did not decipher the label correctly - what do you guys think/read?
Otherwise it would be the famous Borsalino roulette with names...

The seller is A. F. Bodecker branch in Stockholm - but Steve knows more:

Fabulous find, Matt. Hard to tell the exact name from this pic. Could you take another or post a higher resolution one?

A blue Borsalino is at the lower end of the hats that came in this week. Admittedly it is a lter production hat and I bought it to move it along quickly, but it does say something about the others.
Borsalino stingy brim fedora in blue. Size 56 with the raw edge brim just under 5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Weighs 97 grams. Proportioned, shaped and feeling like a little hat. Made during a difficult period in Borsalinos' history. It is what it is. Colour is lovely though.

Catch and release as it’s a 7 ⅛ not a 7 ⅝. Can’t say I’m really disappointed. 2 ¼” brim with an underwelt edge. The open crown is 5 ¾” which was a nice surprise. The felt is substantial and will need steam to hold a shape. The longhair finish is decent, but not nearly as nice as earlier versions. Anyway, it’s going back to the eBay seller.

Borsalino Silchi. Brown longhair finished felt and three rows of zigzag brim edge stitching. The self-felt band looks right on this hat too. The brim is 2 ⅜” wide and the open crown is just shy of 5 ½ inches. The felt is low Celt and is easily dry creased and returned to open crown. Size is 7 ½ and that’s US not French Point. A nice 1970s hat.

This is a magnificent hat I just received courtesy of Doc @NewJack . The sweatband stitches are popping and the leather has deteriorated. I think I’m going to send this out to a new hatter for a new sweatband and a small bump up in size while they are at it. I’m thinking of trying the Garrahan Hat Co.

Some cool finds there, Brent. I like the misto agata colour a lot. What is the colour of that Serikon hat; the pic shows only half the label. I like my longhairs to be well behaved as well. Sometimes spraying a bit of water and just running your hand over the felt is enough.
Good to see at least one sort of making the cut for yourself.

Thanks, Stefan. Any idea when the 7 ⅝ was
Made?

Here’s the rest of the label:

Thanks, Brent. Gesso is one we haven't seen before. They did also have a Gesso sfumata.
As for the 7 5/8 hat it's almost impossible to say, but from the mid fifties on Borsalino tried to make new inroads to the American market. Likely this was made in that period. So I'd say mid-fifties to mid-sixties.

Thanks, Stefan. I’m sad to lose the original sweatband on the 7 ⅝, but at least it will be a wearable hat with a new sweatband.

Very, very nice and the "Misto Agata" is a fantastic color. Agata is a rock used since we are able to work it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agate
It is also my size.... :)
The Serikon "Gesso=Chalk" is fine and as Stefan said it is a new way walked by Borsalino in the US market to have more impact. The longhair finish seems very close to the last production of Borsalino in that kind of felt, so not so bad and some are better than others.
The low ribbon Borsalino is a classic for US market and it was put in restoration some years ago, see the badge. It was made in the sixties or a little bit early, even if it is a type of hat that has not so much changements in its life

Modern hat that was part of a bulk purchase I made late last year. The photos tell give the details. The felt has minimal stiffeners, but it’s not dense and it’s not very moldable. It reminds me a lot of the current Selentino (Tonak) Sterling hats…this Borsalino is “better,” but not by much. The brim is 2 ½” wide.

I am very glad the Borsalino Museum is open.
The last time I called Alessandria to find out if and how the museum could be visited, I was told that its opening was probable, but without any date scheduled. I had called in mid-September when Steve (mayserwegener) came to see me, hoping to take him to visit Alessandria and the museum, after having been to the Marengo factory a few years ago.
Well, I'll arrange to go and then I'll tell you how it is. I've been trying to go there for years :)
