I thought lack of a block depth dimension on the factory tag was late 50s or a 60s indicator. Great score nonetheless!

You may be right, just a guess on my part based on others I have had. Loosely based LOL

There is a block designation - 301. And I believe the A to the left of the reorder number may be the depth. I was going to question the estimate, too, but I'm not so sure now.

    Thanks, B. It's a killer hat.

I really need to break out the paintbrush, though, no?

This is what I was referring to per Brad's site:

And here's some examples from my hats:

    (50s)

I guess I've sort of treated Brad's input as the closest thing to gospel when it comes to hat history.

My first post here on the actual lounge. Though I have been on the FB page for some time.

This Dobbs is the first of a two'fer of black hats that arrived today. I was more focused on the Cavanagh that came with it when I made the purchase. However after arrival and getting them cleaned up a bit... it appears this one is quite a gem. The brim is about 2 1/4 with a Guild Edge (Cavanagh) the open crown is about 5 1/4 or 4 3/4 as now shaped and sports a 2 1/4 black ribbon The felt is super smooth and took a hand crease with ease. The tag inside was not one I've seen before. It had the specs and $15 pricing on it.

Anyone have any thoughts on age?

I can already tell this one is going to be a favorite for me.

    Best,
    Joe

That's a nice one. To date the hat try to find the factory label. You can have a look here also:

Dobbs made some great hats that are sometimes under-appreciated . Looks like you have a nice one there!

A gem indeed. Great wide ribbon, too. Welcome to the Lounge, Joe.

Welcome to the lounge. You certainly have found a nice Dobbs there (I think I recall seeing the auction for two black hats - decided not to go for them). Not an expert on dating Dobbs hats I'm afraid.

I almost passed on them as well. Until I noticed in one of the photos my initials on the Cav's sweat. I thought well. That seals it. They belong with me. .

With the price point an dimensions, definitely 1950s, probably latter half.

But read through the Professor's site, he has good guidance.

Cool thanks. That was about what I was thinking. $15 for a guild edge in 60s would prob be a bit low I'm guessing.

Yes. I've read the professor's stuff. Incredibly useful. Too bad I couldn't locate the manufacturer tag. Not sure what the tag was I had. Guess a sales tag.
