I’m new here and hoping to find some info about a few hats I have acquired in the last year or so. The attached photos are of a Dobbs Homburg that as near as I can tell from what I’ve read on this forum, is from the 1960’s. Am I correct in my assessment?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Lounge! The hat is not a Homburg as, in addition to the center dent crease, the brim would have more curl and be bound. It is a stingy-brim fedora with a center crease. Not much info out there on the "Universitas" line from Dobbs, but the style and black sweat band put it in the late '60s most likely. Do you have a pic of the factory sticker behind the sweatband and up under the edge of the liner?

Here’s a photo of the label inside the band. I hope this helps.

A 1940's dark blue Dobbs Homburg that arrived yesterday. Love that soft 40's Dobbs felt. I swore I wasn't going to buy another Homburg. And, being a man of my word, I didn't - I bought 3 more.

You sure have HAS, Mike. It's not the worst compulsion to have, and yours is nicely adding to an already very great looking collection.

Keep on going!

This derby came in an auction lot. It's not much to look at, but I was curious about this style of paper label. It has the size between the lions, the "Dobbs Fifth Ave New York" above the Block/Depth/Duplicate cells, but the Duplicate cell is on the bottom and not on the right like those shown on The Hatted Professor site.

He doesn't show any pre-1919 paper labels and the 1922-1927 label shown is thought to be a later replacement.

Other clues: The hat has a Bon-Ton-Ivy sweatband, an unsewn seam, and there was a 1929 newspaper folded behind the sweat.

Not sure if this is pre-1919. That would not necessarily preclude the Bon-Ton-Ivy sweat (patented in 1904).

Thoughts?

I'm guessing late 20's to early 30's offhand. I think your tag might be like that on the Black Dobbs from that period I posted a few weeks ago. Look on the previous page of this thread.

Thanks Mike. I'm guessing you dated yours based on the liner logo w/o the address numbers in the banner. Good to know ... I don't have to change my auction listing. :)

Brown Dobbs Cross Country. 2 inch brim, 5 1/2 inch open crown with ventilation holes in logo, 3/4 inch ribbon, 1 1/2 inch sweatband. The hat is still misshapen from shipping, etc. I had tentatively dated this hat to 1922-1927, based on mfg tag, but some 30's tags seem to look the same also, so I'm not sure of the date. Did hat crowns have ventilation holes in the 30's? This hat is very thin and lightweight. Seems it was sold at Meier & Frank Co., a department store based in Portland, OR and I think it says the price was $6.00, per sticker on inside of sweatband. Doing a search on Cross Country here on FL, on pg 10 of search was a supposed 30's hat for sale with a very similar crown logo, which looks like it has ventilation holes.
