I'm a little late on the reply, but, great looking jacket Dinerman! Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the originals called Grizzly because the insert was bear skin? I have put off buying one, just did not think I could pull the look off! Now that I have some pre 40s motorcycles, I may have to save up.
You are right, the vast majority were as you describe them! I did a quick Google search and found, there were exceptions, straight hair panels, mostly horse. I remember seeing one a while back, that looked for all the world like Holstein cow pattern. I suppose, any fur could be used on a custom jacket! Still, I think I would rather have yours, over a cow!I get the impression that the term "grizzly" is fairly recent, coined by modern collectors. It wasn't used by any of the companies that produced them, so far as I can tell. Most period ads referred to them as "Laskin Lamb Jackets" or "Laskin Lamb Cossack Jackets", after the waist-length cut.
The panels on the originals were not bear skin- they were generally "Laskin Lamb", which was a type of mouton fur (electrically straightened sheepskin). Some ads refer to the panels as being "electrified wombat", but that's more than likely to just be another trade term for the same sheepskin.
