Okay...I was in one of my insomniac episodes trying to
get to sleep and I began to think about the movie "Grease" (1978)
with John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John. Don't ask me
how that came into my brain, but then I began to think
of how it might have been casted if this movie had been filmed
during the actual period.

The the whole movie would have changed it's tone entirely.

I began to think of a cast from the 1950s era and this is what
I came up with.

Marlon Brando as Danny Zuko
Grace Kelly...Sandy

Pink Ladies
Elizabeth Taylor....Betty Rizzo
Marilyn Monroe....Frenchie
Sophia Loren....Marty Maraschino
Jennifer Jones...Jan

T-Birds
Robert Mitchum....Kenickie
Dennis Hopper....Sonny
Sal Mineo....Putzie

So, after thinking of how Brando & Grace Kelly would exchange
lines along with everyone else, it would have definitely been
more of a drama without all the song & dance. Kind of in the vein of
Rebel Without A Cause ~

ANYHOW...I thought this was kind of fun and open for some fun reading.

What modern day film would
you cast with classic actors? And who would the line-up be?

Take the flick Pulp Fiction... in the 40's:

John Travolta... Vincent Vega -- Dick Powell
Samuel L. Jackson... Jules Winnfield -- John Wayne
Bruce Willis... Butch Coolidge -- Burt Lancaster
Ving Rhames... Marsellus Wallace -- Orson Welles
Uma Thurman... Mia Wallace -- Rita Hayworth

Was tempted to list Bob Hope and Bing Crosby for the first two.

Clint Eastwood is a monodimensional actor. Imagine Steve McQueen or James Coburn as Harry Callahan, or Coogan -- mobile expressions; modulated speech; swagger and arrogance that's real.

Steve McQueen was supposed to be Harry Callahan- but he ultimately turned down that role.
Makes you wonder......

Another funny twist on this thread would be which Fedora Lounge members (pretending we were all actors and actresses that is) would we cast for both Grease and Pulp Fiction?

Read: Bullitt. I don't really need to wonder.

I wouldn't trade Eastwood's Callahan for anyone else in the world. There is something to be said of Iconic vs. MonoDimensional. + I'm just a big Clint fan.

Although I liked Pulp Fiction...it's just one of those films that
I can only watch just once because I hate really 'in your face' violence.
I suppose a 1940's version would be waaaaaay less gory.

I would love to see Rita with black hair & bangs...
doin' that little dance with Dick Powell!!

Hey Louise Brooks would be a really great Mia Wallace too ~

fun Game, but I can't imagine Robert Michum as a t-bird.

However, replace John Wayne (Samuel jackson) in Pulp Fiction with Robert Michum and now you're talking.

Funny, Crass Movie.

Fletch said:
Get Shorty is a great choice because if it were less crass and more subtle, it could have been a '40s movie.

I can't see Hepburn doing anything noir, though. How about Alexis Smith?

Total agreement.

Due to an abundance of ignorance about her, I've never heard of Alexis Smith. :D

I give you: Alexis Smith.

Not a lot of people are familiar with Spielberg's sophomoric war comedy 1941, but I got to thinking who could have been in it if it had actually been made in 1941.

Captain Kelso (John Belushi): Broderick Crawford
Sergeant Tree (Dan Aykroyd): Jack Carson
Mr. Douglas (Ned Beatty): Charles Winninger
Wally: Glenn Ford
Betty: Priscilla Lane
Captain Kleinschmidt: Conrad Veidt
Commander Mitamura: Peter Lorre
Slim Pickens: Andy Devine

I tried sending last night but it didn't go through

Hey, Fletch, I like your casting for 1941.:eusa_clap
I was thinking Forrest Tucker as Kelso but the more I think, the more I agree with you.
How about Betty Hutton as Maxine ( the Wendi Jo Sperber role)?
Robert Stack (for synergy) as Loomis?
Maybe Eddie Bracken as Wally and Sterling Holloway as his buddy Dennis.
Ann Sheridan as Donna Stratton.
Actually, Broderick crawford would be a good "Stretch" Sitarski.
Directed by Preston Sturges.

However, after all the madcap mayhem. The cast talks directly to audience about how "We've all had some fun but this war is no laughing matter. You can buy War Bonds in the lobby of this theater to our troops."

Well, that my 2.5 cents.

Sincerely,
The Wolf
