Touring the Beaches of Normandy

Whilst watching the WWII in Color series on VE day yesterday on the History Channel, I saw that the shows were sponsored by Leger Battlefield Tours.

Does anyone have any experience with this outfit?

I would like to drive to Northern France (via boat) for a week or so with my wife. I want to revisit Brittanny (where I lived for a year) and also spend some time over in Normandy. In particular I am interested in the American beaches: Utah, Omaha and the graves and areas of interest etc.

Perhaps for me a guided tour would be better when I get over there rather than an excursion.

Does any one have any recommendations?

Brian, I went a few years ago with Leger Holidays after doing research on a number of companies based in the UK.

Leger were the most reasonably priced and after being on holiday with them on a 'guided tour' (which I'd recommend for your first time on a battlefield tour, otherwise you will waste so much time finding places and then not really knowing what the field is that you are looking at!), I really cannot say a bad thing about them!

Accomodation is good in a decent hotel, the guides are enthusiastic and really read up on their subjects (they are all totally engrossed about their subject!) and bring the whole thing to life.

Since going on the Normandie trip, I have been to the Somme last year and am off to Ypres for a Great War walking tour with Legers next week.

If you need any other info, just ask me. The only 'poor' thing that got me, was the bus journey down to Dover. So now I make my own way to London and pick up the coach at Victoria station.
(just a personal preference of mine).

Battebus

Mr.H
I have only heard good comments about the brit Paul Woodadge's Battlebus.
They do seperate tours on Omaha and Utah - as well as the British/Canadian beaches. Even have a special 101/82 Airborne Tour behind Utah.
Worth a checkup.

Battlebus tours

I went on a tour with Battlebus during my last visit to Normandy and would recommend them most highly. They operate from Bayeaux and it is from there that the tours started and finished each day. The prices for the tours included entry into all the museums and various sites that we visited and the fluent english speaking tour guide was able to give a depth of information that would please anybody. I found that they seemed to have a good relationship with the locals as well, since we visited several sites that were on private farm land that may not be known or available to others.

Mr.H. Hope you enjoy your trip to the beaches. Let us hear which tour operator you went with - and you experiences.
