A recent find which stretches the topic for this forum... this "birdstone" came from a collection in Ohio. These are thought to be relics from the archaic to woodland period in Native American history. There are two pairs of holes drilled front and aft, perhaps an attachment method for use attaching to an atlatl or throwing spear. There is no guarantee that this is a true ancient artifact. Many reproductions have been sold and confirming the authenticity is difficult. This one is very spare in figurative detail and has an abstract simplicity that appealed to me. It is five inches in length. I made the stand over the weekend from a piece of olive wood and a drawer pull so I can display it with my small collection of meteorites.

  3. My wife’s Grandfather wore this one quit a bit. We’ve had it 40 years or more. Not sure of the artist (@alanfgag you might have to help with the hallmark). Stones from Bisbee.

Are the marks above the K a letter or a pictogram?

Those are some of the prettiest bisbee turquoise stones I've seen. Beauty.

  5. Thanks Alan! I think it's a pictogram.

  7. Nobody made it out of the portal at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe without buying something directly from the Native American artists. I bought a beaded hatband from Bernice Bonney (Navajo). She is in her 80s I think.

Thanks Bob, I think the stone was sourced from the Nevada Royston mine.

  11. Yet another gift from a friend. He purchased it in Gallup, NM in the early 1990s. Artist’s initials are E. H. Excuse the frightening close up of my wrinkled old hand.

  13. My daughter “shed” this pile last night. Not sure where she keeps her toe bells...

  14. Had new leather put on my Esther Spencer (Navajo) bolo. May take some work or wear to straighten it out.

I like that a lot! The colors look really good. I was looking for a beaded hat band, you can send it with Elvis!
