Unpadded shoulders

The ideal American lounge (a.k.a., business) suit jacket is supposed to have no shoulder padding. No support of any kind? No interfacing? No canvas? Is that really true? I refer only to the shoulder area. Lining is acceptable, of course.

I suppose that applies to American dinner jackets and tailcoats as well.

Every Chinese tailor I've met has always insisted on some form of shoulder padding for a business suit jacket.

No. The soft shoulder is much more common to Neapolitan and a few Savile Row tailors.
