The McMenamins (brothers I think) are a huge part and responsible for much of the craft beer boom in Oregon. They perfected the buying of historic buildings (churches too) and turning them into entertainment hubs with craft beer as the core...add good food and ambiance and you have a success formula. I wonder if there is a family connection here? They at least share the entrepreneurial spirit.

Thanks for your efforts. Re-learning about where the old hats come from and how they were made is a fascinating part of this hat hobby.

I can't buy all the hats I would like, but I love doing this type of research. My little way of contributing to the Lounge

Valentine the Hatter in confederate gray. 3 1/4” raw edge brim and 5 1/2” open crown. The felt is substantial but with a nice hand. It came with a CSA emblem pinned to the front, but that could start a riot these days...and I’m not into re-enactments so the badge came off.


The size tag is a bit odd. I measured the hat using my millinery sizing tool and came up with 7 3/8. I also noticed that the only marking on the sweatband was the name of the person who commissioned it. I suspect that the hat started life as a 7 1/8 and was at some point resized to a 7 3/8. Too bad they didn’t go to 7 5/8.

I traded Brent for the “rebel” Valentine above. Great hat, but (as always) it’s too small for me to wear. It now hangs out as one of three of the four Valentines as a display piece (although my wife does wear the telescope one on occasion). Thanks for allowing me to be the current caretaker of this one @deadlyhandsome !
