Victorian Era Fiction

I wasn't sure where to post this, but:

I've been looking into reading some fiction, perhaps adventure, detectives (besides Sherlock Holmes) or even "graphic novels" set in and around the 1880s-1910 era. I've read the classics like Jules Verne and some H.G. Wells, but was wanting to look into some writing that isn't so well known and perhaps written recently. You know, things like The Wild, Wild West TV series and the 1982 Sam Waterston series, Q.E.D.. Your suggestions are eagerly awaited...Feel free to mention movies, too.

EDIT: Isn't this stuff called "Steampunk"?

Tom Swift!

Find some of the original Tom Swift books. They were written by various individuals under the name of Victor Appleton. I started out on Tom Swift Jr, in 1957, but then discovered the originals. Much fun. This is Steampunk back in the actual day.

"War of the Worlds" is a goodie and way ahead of its time.

Anything by Kipling is magic.

H. Rider Haggard obviously did some rip-roaring tales.

"Heart of Darkness" is brilliant

And I think it just misses out the Victorian era, but "The Wind in the Willows" is fantastic, I've loved it since a boy.

Just a Follow Up...

Here are some titles recommended to me by those in the know:

"Infernal Devices: A Mad Victorian Fantasy" and "Morlock Night" by K. W. Jeter.

"A Nomad of the Time Streams", a trilogy by Michael Moorcock.

"The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling.

"The Light Ages", by Ian McLeod.

"Lord Tyger"
"The Adventure of the Peerless Peer"
"The Other Log of Phileas Fogg" by Philip Jose Farmer.

It's not strictly Victorian, but it's still set in British India and still powered by steam, so I recommend S.M. Stirlings's The Peshawar Lancers.

Also not Victorian, but delightful: Girl Genius.

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde.

Both excellent reads :)

Thanks to Spiffy for prompting the thought ;)
