Vintage Lock & Co Bowler

Kevlar

Location
South Jersey
Maker: Lock &Co. Hatters, London

Style: Bowler

Color: Old Pewter

Size: Inside circumference is 22 1/2 inches.

Condition: The hat is in very fine condition. Must have been worn at one time because someone put two small, thin piece of white felt inside the sweatband in the front of the hat, although there is a re-sizing string set inside the white leather sweat band. There is no fauxing inside the hat at all, or other signs of wear. The initials "H.F.O" are printed in gold lettering on the inside of the sweatband. The hat has a 1 inch hatband in a slightly darker shade. The 2 inch brim features a pencil curl.

The box is, quite frankly, a mess, but a fascinating one. Yes, it has brown blotches all over it, but it also has a 4 inch round Lock & Co. insignia (partially torn.) On the rim of the top of the box is information about the hat: the color -- Old Pewter -- the date it was sold -- 11/9/70 -- and many guesses to its hat size. (I am a 7 3/8 and it fits me a tad loosely.) At one point the hat was taken aboard The French Line for a cruise because it has First Class tags and stamps from that company. It even has a United States Customs Service Inspected Baggage stamp from when it came to America.

Inside the hat box is a cardboard bowl fixed to the bottom of the box so the bowler can rest in the approved fashion when placed in the box, intact after more than 40 years. There also are a travel guide to Great Britain and a hand written list of places to visit in London inside the hat box.

Asking price: $225, plus shipping. USPS MO or certified check only.
