"Stranger on the Shore" is a piece for the clarinet written by Acker Bilk, (Bernard Stanley Bilk, MBE, 28 January 1929 – 2 November 2014,) for his young daughter and originally named "Jenny" after her. The tune was written on a single scrap of paper by Bilk and handed over to Leon Young who crafted the string arrangement, including the characteristic harmonic shifts at the very end.

It was first released in 1961 in the UK, and then in the US, and reached number 1 in the US and number 2 in the UK. In May 1969, the crew of Apollo 10 took "Stranger on the Shore" on their mission to the moon.Gene Cernan, a member of the crew, included the tune on a cassette tape used in the command module of the Apollo spacecraft.

It was the UK's biggest-selling single of 1962, and the biggest-selling instrumental single of all time. On 26 May 1962, "Stranger on the Shore" became the first British recording to reach number one on the U.S.Billboard Hot 100 where it was issued by Atlantic Records on the Atco label.

Stranger On The Shore is a permanent treasue tucked inside my Youtube mix file.

Billy Eckstein's Secret Love; Matt Monro's Love Is A Many Splendored Thing; Etta James' At Last.
And either Hatfield or Monro for Unchained Melody.

Wild Turkey 101
a fine rye poured over ice to accompany heartstrings tremble.

Take a look at my last post on the what hat thread. There you will see last night's band who finished with this Duke Ellington favourite.

Gotcha. Good to see folk back on the dance floor. Forgot to include Felicia Saunders' iconic
Where Is Your Heart? and, of course, Percy Faith's orchestral.

If you haven't seen The Red Violin I heartily recommend this film.
The ultimate chick flick but a movie of substance; dovetails with a romantic mood, Kentucky bourbon, or a single malt Scotch. ;)

Maurice Chevalier -- En 1925
A wickedly tongue in cheek song that I think many of us here at the Fedora Lounge can relate to.

Lyrics (English)

In 1925, we were backward!
Can we imagine that there was no TV?
In the evening, when they dined
The couples were talking to each other
Just like lovers Oh, unfortunate!

In 1925, there was no transistor
And no Hit Parade, it's much sadder still
You had to choose the song you liked yourself
Ah! my God what a job! Long live progress!

The men had slicked back hair Parted in the middle or on the side
We couldn't be wrong, they were men
In short, there was no suspense
And as for the women who were all pretty
As pretty, it must be said, as today But eccentric, showy, oh! what a pace
All that has changed, of course

In 1925, people, what misery!
Paid little cheap rents every three months
They didn't know the joy of buying in twenty years A fourteenth on courtyard Residence Bellecour

In 1925, there was no weekend
There was no car for people to relax
We couldn't leave and breathe the clean air
While risking death on Autoroute Nord

In 1925, look at the photos
The men, as hats, wore boaters
Need I explain to you what a boater was?
Oh no! you're going to fool me, I take my hat off to you
Presto!
