What hat are you waiting for today?

Not sure how they are made at the factory level but custom hatters use two felts.....block both felts, cut the brim from the crown and sew the different colours together hiding the seam with the trimmings. If you can find a customer for the reverse colour scheme you don't waste a felt. Milliners (as separate from men's hatters) often cut the brims and resew them even when not swapping colours.......makes no sense but there ya go.
I’ve had the ribbon/bow off of mine and there is no visible seam, I think it’s magic, Keebler elves or such.
Yes, my big question would be: how do they prevent dye bleed?

How in the hell do you get a distinct line between the colours? Gotta be elves of some description.....its the only thing that makes sense.
It could be related to the Pending Patent in the hat I bought. I've not had any luck searching for that though.
Here you go ... (so I'm guessing my hat is between '58 and '61 with the "pending" status).

Nice detective work, Bob.
Great investigative work there Det Hufford! I still think there may be some elves involved somehow.
Good work! Not certain if this is the same process @jlee562 found a while back, but I'm on my phone and hate searching for threads on it.
Thank you, gentlemen, for the quick response: Very interesting and a bit magical.

Penney's Marathon.

This was one of those auctions where you think you win as they have an ending date/time, but then they go to a live auction with your max bid still in effect. The problem is you don't know there is a live auction as there is no link from the item page (there is on the catalog page) and by the time you notice the "May Have Won" status it's too late and the lot has scrolled off the live site. Then you just wait to see if you get invoiced. In this case I did for $6.

Great Balls of Fire again Hat Wizard Hufford. Another great catch of cool ones. The one 7 1/4 straw is Hanoki straw. I know a feller in Buckeye AZ who’ll have his eye on that one if it lands on eBay.

What made you go for that Barrister? I mean it's a good looking hat for sure, but what made it stand out?

The price is what did it for me. It’s been for sale for a long time at a fair price with no takers. Then the price was cut in half and I made an offer that was accepted. I don’t usually buy these small hats, but it looked nice and I was curious.
