What does "high fenders" mean?

Brim turned up high & sharply on the sides. Roper's out in West Texas do it so their lariats will clear the brim. There's no earthly reason for anyone else to do it.

Then off to take my wife to lunch in a go-to hat, this green Dalton

Great show of felt today, everyone is pulling out all the stops,
Wearing my new velour Borsalino Antica Casa traveller on Tyrol Tuesday. This thing is so soft it's crazy. Sorry about the pics, it's a hard one to photograph in lousy light.

How long do I have to stay cheerful about the rain? I know we need it, but I am starting to feel like a mushroom.
