On a long haul flight from Beijing over the weekend, watched a few old films, in particular Goldfinger, and Moby ****. The latter is even better than I recalled - a stunning turn by Gregory Peck as Ahab, and I love the portrayal of QueeQuegg (spelling?). THe latter was surprisingly rather sensitive for its time.... and I adore the line "Better a sober cannibal than a drunk Christian". lol Goldfinger is by a long chalk the best of the Bond films. While I do like Craig (or, at least, two of his three films), I do often wonder how differently Bond might be viewed if they had knocked it on the head when Connery was done with it, rather than attempt to replace him, bearing in mind they needed five shots before they found one that was halfway credible in the role (i.e. Craig). Goldfinger is that rarest of beasts: very much of its time, yet it still holds up today. Maybe Craig's films will in forty years' time. none of Moore's do. Or any of the other palle imitators of Connery, for that matter.

I'd agree with all that Edward though I did quite like George Lazenby's portrayal the " that guy had guts" when he gets chewed up by the snow blower is a classic!
I never liked Moore et al around that time JB was turned into almost a comedy show imho.

Unfortunately, no not yet but at some point I will. As good as Oldman is as the over the top villian, Reno is equally as entertaining as the understated hero. This movie and The Usual Suspects get better with each viewing.

TCM showed two great Eleanor Parker films tonight, "The Very Thought if You", from 1944, and "Between Two Worlds", also from 1944. Just good old fashioned enjoyable melodramas. Eleanor Parker is TCM's star of the month.

I always liked that line to. Although, the original line as penned by Herman Melville was, "Better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian!" A lot of truth to that saying.

The Thin Red Line. Good, but weird. I'm not sure that the Tree of Life-style deep-thoughts-and-sun-through-leaves segments really balanced the intense combat sequences as intended.

The more I watch that film the more imprssed I am with it. It got a lot of unfair comparison's to "Saving Private Ryan" upon release which was a shame. SPR was straight, slam bam storytelling. Not a lot of subtleties there. TTRL is a deeply layered affair that's at first hard to watch and harder to follow but if you stick with it and come back to it sometimes later you begin to see what they were getting at. Great underrated film

Its been years since I last saw Leon, so long that I had forgotten all about it, so its good to be reminded.... and prompted me to order the directors cut, which I am very excited about. The three main characters give such great performances, with Oldman doing deranged so very well.

Last film - Star Trek on BD.

"Letters from Iwo Jima".

A lot of reviews say this film is very good. So I finally bought a copy at the local flea-market and gave it a run-through. I found it very enjoyable. Not many movies from "Allied" producers & directors concentrate on the 'enemy side' of the same story. Anyone who hasn't seen it won't be disappointed.

Less then a minute for me. Michael Douglas rubbing Matt Damon's shin was all it took for me. A blonde 1970's Damon scares me.
