I saw The Endless Summer when it first came out (I think it was 1966), and never forgot it. Great documentary (and great poster with the surfer walking on a beach with surfboard balanced on head).

So all in all, not hippie.
Great movie TOE and WB no doubt about it.
I really don't surf either, because the MS river isn't made for that.
Too many barges.

Good points there. Surfing requires effort and focus. Hippies poison sharks though.
