What were bomber mission stars?

I'm going to start painting some new nose art on an A2.
I noticed that some mission bombs on the side of some planes had a star (sometimes in different colours) painted under the bomb for a particular mission. Does anyone know why this was done? My friend thinks it represented wounded for that mission. I'm not so sure.

Somebody who knows more will chime in soon enough. But I think those indicated when that was the lead aircraft of the squadron or of the group, while on that mission.
