For those of you who can understand french, you can listen to these radio podcast about the song Lili Marleen:
http://www.europe1.fr/MediaCenter/Emissions/Au-coeur-de-l-histoire/Sons/L-INTEGRALE-L-incroyable-histoire-d-une-chanson-Lili-Marleen-1042745/

This song called "La Strasbourgeoise" was created at the end of the 19th century, during the Prussian War, but was sung too during the 2WW. It is about a child whose father was killed on the front. It is a very sad song.

Lift your head and hold it high, honey!
Lift your head and hold it high, baby!
Lift your head and hold it high,
The Fifth Marines are passing by!
Honey baby, my!

I dont want a BAR, honey!
I dont want a BAR, baby!
I dont want a BAR,
I'll get me a babe with a candy bar!
Honey baby, my!

Dont want hashmarks on my sleeve, honey!
Dont want hashmarks on my sleeve, baby!
Dont want hashmarks on my sleeve,
All I want is a ten year leave!
Honey baby, my!

The Captain's got a heavy pack, honey!
The Captain's got a heavy pack, baby!
The Captain's got a heavy pack,
Oh Lord I hope it breaks his back!
Honey baby, my!

You dont have to call me sarge, honey!
You dont have to call me sarge, baby!
You dont have to call me sarge,
All I want is a quick discharge!
Honey baby, my!

WACs and WAVEs will win the war, honey!
WACs and WAVEs will win the war, baby!
WACs and WAVEs will win the war,
So what the heck are we marching for?
Honey baby, my!

Lift your head and hold it high, honey!
Lift your head and hold it high, baby!
Lift your head and hold it high,
The Fifth Marines are passing by!
Honey baby, my!

Bless 'em all, bless 'em all,
the long and the short and the tall.
There'll be no promotion this side of the ocean,
Cheer up my lads! Bless 'em all!

Well we sent for the army to come to tulagi,
but General MacArthur said no.
I'll tell you the reason, this isnt the season,
besides you've got no USO!

Bless em all! Bless em all!
The long and the short and the tall!
There'll be no promotion this side of the ocean,
Cheer up my lads! Bless em all!

Well we sent for the Navy to come to tulagi,
the dear little Navy agreed.
In seventeen sections, from thirty directions,
Oh lord, what a screwed up stampede!

Bless em all! Bless em all!
The long and the short and the tall!
There'll be no promotion this side of the ocean,
Cheer up my lads! Bless em all!

Well we sent for the Air Force to come to tulagi,
The Air Force arrived on the scene.
And bombed out six duckies, five horses, ten monkeys,
and seven platoons of Gyrenes!

Bless em all! Bless em all!
The long and the short and the tall.
There'll be no promotion this side of the ocean,
Cheer up my lads! Bless em all!

Well we sent for the Coast Guard to come to tulagi,
The dear little Coast Guard replied,
By sending a letter, we like it here better.
But maybe we'll make it next year!

Bless em all! Bless em all!
The long and the short and the tall!
There'll be no promotion this side of the ocean,
Cheer up my lads! Bless em all!

Well we sent for the Nurses to come to tulagi,
the nurses they made it with ease.
Their arse on the table, each bearing this label:
Reserved for the Officers, please!

Bless em all! Bless em all!
The long and the short and the tall!
There'll be no promotion this side of the ocean,
Cheer up my lads! PPPPPPPFFFFPPPPPFFFTTTTTT!!!!!! BLESS EM ALL!

There's so many versions of this much beloved Russian song that I couldn't decide which one was the best. So it was a toss up between...

Taisiya Povaliy

and Larisa Dolina

Rastsvetali yabloni i grushi,
Poplyli tumany nad rekoy.
Vykhodila, na bereg Katyusha,
Na vysokiy na bereg krutoy.
Vykhodila, na bereg Katyusha,
Na vysokiy na bereg krutoy.
Vykhodila, pesnyu zavodila
Pro stepnogo, sizogo opla,
Pro togo, kotorogo lyubila,
Pro togo, ch'i pis'ma beregla.
Pro togo, kotorogo lyubila,
Pro togo, ch'i pis'ma beregla.
Oy ty, pesnya, pesenka debich'ya,
Ty peti, za usnym solntsem vsled.
I boytsu na dal'nem pogranich'e
Ot Katyusha pereday privet.
I boytsu na dal'nem pogranich'e
Ot Katyusha pereday privet.
Pust' on vspomnit debushku prostuyu,
Pust' uslyshit, kak ona poyot,
Pust' on zemlyu berezhyot rodnuyu,
A lyubov' Katyusha sberezhyot.
Pust' on zemlyu berezhyot rodnuyu,
A lyubov' Katyusha sberezhyot.

Pears and apples blossomed on their branches.
River mist was spreading high and wide.
On the steep and lofty bank at morning
Kate came walking by the riverside.

Kate came walking, singing in the morning
Of a brave gray eagle of the steppes,
Of a man she'd come to call beloved
Of a man whose letters she had kept.

"Darling song, song of a loving maiden,
Following the sun fly high and straight
Toward a soldier far out on the border
Bringing greetings from yours truly Kate.

Bid him then recall a simple woman,
Bid him hear her voice in every verse,
Bid him with his life guard mother Russia,
And his Kate shall guard their love with hers."

Pears and apples blossomed on their branches.
River mist was spreading high and wide.
On the steep and lofty bank at morning
Kate came walking by the riverside..

Only one WW2 vet that I know, has mentioned having a song that sums up the war for him. That was "Roll Out the Barrel" the last song he heard on the radio before the declaration of war was announced. For the rest of his life that song brought back memories of the next 5 years.
