Your occupation and how you dress

I process payments for a large company. I wear what I make (see the thread in the Powder Room.) With the exception of sleeping, cleaning, exercise, and lounging around the house, I always wear what I make.

Interior Design/ Architecture firm - I wear vintage some days...most days mixed with vintage inspired pieces. It's my thing. When I have client meetings I tend to wear repro or tone it down a bit for the sake of their comfort. Once we are into a project though and they get to know me - I wear what I like. I keep a modern jacket in the office to change into if something gets thrown my way. I do not don gloves or hats though to the office. I have a lot of freedom - but I realize that not everyone appreciates the style. THese days we need every client we can get - so I tone it down.

I'm a Safety Director for a large state psychiatric hospital, and usually dress in a three-piece suit (complete with fedora).

However, I will be RETIREING in THREE days :eusa_clap so my daily attire will change to bib overalls and work boots (I'm planning on working a lot around the house and in the garden).

Wow - yep congrats - and have fun in the garden.

Wish it was me!!!! But I married a woman younger than me, and she claims I have to work just as long as she does. Totally unfair. I started 10 years before her Only joking: I love my job, and don't know what I should do without it. (Sorry fo hijacking the thead. Wont happen again...)

I work in the Special Collections department of my library, so I have to be able to wear things that I can get down on the floor or climb ladders in. I have done both successfully in vintage, but I tend to wear jeans, a cute vintage-inspired blouse and a cardigan. I need to dress nicely because I work with the public too, but I can't dress TOO nicely because old books can be QUITE dirty! Plus I make housings for books as well, which usually involves getting graphite and paste all over my hands and sleeves.

Libraries are messier than you'd think!

I am a large format printer making photo reproductions and presentation boards. I also do allot of old map and historical document reproduction. I have a large 50' scanner for anyone out there that might need your map ect scanned. It's odd because this work was not there until I took over my dept. I think I attack old things. I love it though very interesting. I posted before the scans of the original hand drawn Auburn, Cord and Deusenburg designs that came to me at work. Fabulous! I wear vintage every day no one cares what I wear. Everyone else is in jeans and t shirts. We had a high ranking corporate lady come one day and she told me that it was the first time she had ever walked into a reprographics shop and ever saw anyone in a skirt. I couldn't decide if she thought that I was crazy or interesting.

I own a custom screen-printing shop

...although it can get pretty messy working with inks and solvents at times, I still manage to inject my vintage tastes into my daily workwear.

I usually wear a pendelton or chambray workshirt, Levis, and a newboy cap. My main allowance for the possibility or getting ink all over me is that I wear crapped out jeans and thrifted, non-vintage, shirts. But on days I'm not running the press myself, I can always be found in reproduction red-line Levis, and vintage shirts and jackets.

Wow! Thanks for all the wonderful replies. It's so interesting to know what goes on in a persons work place on top of knowing what is appropriate to wear. I tend to wear more vintage for my job but I'm starting to feel that I must dress down and wear more repro's or cardigans due to heavy activity at my job such as merchandising, lifting boxes and climbing step stool ladders.

I work in a hospital (psychiatric nurse), and almost always dress in vintage (I have a "for work" wardrobe). At first my coworkers thought I was off my nut, but they quickly warmed to it and profuse compliments are the rule, rather than the exception. During one Xmas staff party I wore one of my nice suits, tie and such and they went nuts.

As a civilian Security Specialist working amongst a sea of military folks in camoflage uniforms, anyone NOT in uniform tends to stand out. While I don't really dress "vintage" it can best be described as "vintage inspired". Normally, I will wear a pair of WWII-style khakis or L.L. Bean Chinos in khaki or olive, with a starched, button-down Oxford shirt in white, French blue, or pinstriped. With this I wear either a pair of polished Alden 405 boots or a pair of WWII Army Air Corps-style brown Oxfords. In cool weather, I will wear either an A2 jacket, or a Wested Indy jacket. While I would prefer to wear one of my many fedoras, there seems to be an unwritten rule here that you have to be at least 60 to do that. lol So, barring a fedora, I wear a ballcap. [huh] While not strictly vintage, at least it's not "homeless chic" like most of our IT guys... :eusa_doh:

Funny. We own a printing factory and my boss is travelling to Fort Wayne next week to buy a Kimoti (I'm unsure of the spelling). I work in shipping, which means I get to drive a Buick around town and deliver stuff. Generally small packages, although I get the occasional load that's big enough to lower the clearance of the car significantly.

I wear a lot of pinstripes and grey suits. Fedoras sometimes, generally a panama or trilby on other days. Sometimes I dress safari style, because my job requires me to hold a lot of stuff in pockets, and bush jackets are just so handy. Plus I live in a desert, so it doesn't seem out of place on weekends.

For work though, it's really a lot of mundane suits, which we've all been wearing since 1600 in one form or another.

I'm currently serving as an air force officer, so of course it's blue from top to bottom.

I am leaving the regulars at the end of the summer, though, entering a civilian occupation that will enable more creativity (in my case, being able to choose anything NOT blue). Most definitely looking forward to it!

I work as a metalsmith/welder in my backyard studio. I tend to wear steel toes, lightweight top and denim overalls. I moonlight sewing accessories like gloves and spats, which is nice because I can wear vintage or repro dresses, or pretty much anything that's not soot covered(thank goodness.)

I'm the house manager of a restored small-town theatre, which means I'm in charge of operations thruout the building -- everything from supervising projection to ordering supplies to managing staff to sitting in the box selling tickets to fixing things that break. I actually got the job, in part, because of the way I dress, and I dress that way every day.

Because I'm moving around a lot, and could at any moment end up on my hands and knees cleaning up a fountain syrup leak, unstopping a drain, or climbing up into the flyspace above the stage to reset the air conditioning, I save suits, special-occasion dresses, nylons, and heels for special occasions -- my everyday wardrobe is homemade vintage-pattern dresses in washable cottons, cotton stockings, and sensible oxfords.

If I have to do really heavy work, like scraping rust or repainting the marquee I'll wear my air-raid-warden overalls. But generally speaking, I've yet to find a job around here I can't do in a dress.

I Drive truck for a container company. So I can wear a red or black polo shirt with the company logo and jeans. Once in a while I will mix it up and put on last years grey shirt but only when I'm felling a little spicy.

BUt other than that, I like to wear full, A-line skirts, fitted sweaters or blouses, and 50s style "secretary" dresses. To accessorize, I wear pearls or cat's eye glasses.

Lindylady your clothing selections sound similar to what I wear - I am an extern in an office and I am on my feet most of the day so comfortable shoes are a must. May I ask what types/kinds of shoes do you wear and if you could post some pics that would be wonderful. Thanks.
