I personally thought the Theremin was cool as hell. Can't watch 50's Sci Fi properly without it!

1949 American League Rookie of the Year Roy Sievers has died at the age of 90. Sievers was the first player to win that award following its creation, on the strength of a solid .306 batting average, 16 homer, and 75 RBI season for the St. Louis Browns. He went on to have his best years with the Washington Senators, standing as one of the league's best outfielders not named Williams or Mantle. Sievers later played with the White Sox and Phillies before returning to Washington to end his career in 1965.
Late in life, Sievers was very active as a member of the St. Louis Browns alumni association, and with his passing there are only 14 men left alive who once played for the Browns.

I saw a live concert a few years back performed by Elizabeth Brown, one of the few living masters of the theremin, and it was an astounding display of skill. I've always wanted to try my hand at it myself, but I'm afraid of terrorizing the cat.
Leon Theremin himself was a pretty fascinating character, who lived long enough to appear in a documentary about his life in the 1990s.

According to his publicist, comedian and actor Don Rickles died Thursday from kidney failure at his Los Angeles home. He was 90 years old.

Aww. I saw him live at our big summer event about ten years ago, and will never, ever forget his opening line: "Sixty years in show business! And where do I end up? The Maine F*ing Lobster Festival!" What a character.

I only had the opportunity to see him perform live once, at the live broadcast of HBO's "Comic Relief V" in 1992, but he was brilliant. The acts who appeared before him managed to generate some laughs, but nothing spectacular. Rickles immediately took command of both the stage and the audience, showing "the kids" how it was supposed to be done, and by the time he left the stage the new energy in the audience was almost tangible. It was an impressive display of a man putting his years of experience to good use, and he had mastered the art of doing so.

Rickles, often accused of being a (insert your PC cause de jour here) was a far nicer man and much more loving than people ever saw.... Being mean and irascible was his "shtick" not his life.

I think the theremin had its film debut in "The Lost Weekend"(1945).
Just confused that a man of normally impeccable taste would like that infernal machine.
