There was an interesting thread I read a few weeks back discussing the "morality" of repairing moth nibbles in an otherwise good vintage hat. Some perspectives held that it was disrespectful to the original to "alter" it by repairing. I had not considered that perspective at all. I would think nothing of it and go ahead and fill the moth nibbles.

From what I gather, the plastic felts are rare, even more so being a Mallory variant. It seems that right after Stetson took over, they produced the same model with the Stetson company logos on place (same embossing methods and all). Can see this in the hat Alan shared in the Plastic Felt thread.
The hat is definately rigid, has some give, but since it was blocked from the factory, it hold that shape well. the texture reminds me of some old overcoats I own. You can definately feel the wool content in it for sure.
For the consistency, I guess I have a little luck on my side. When I'm not devoting time to the wife, dog, or car, I'm searching every corner I can for another hat. I'm going to have to slow down for awhile as my space is all but pretty much filled, but I said that a few hats ago too, haha

Great find, Justin.The Stetson advertisement for Plastic Felt hats has been attributed to 1939. I am not sure that is correct. This hat is constructed as a cloth hat - perhaps in an independent facility making product for both Stetson and Mallory. Here is a link to hat sold by Spencer a few years back. It shows a more traditional leather sweatband with deeply debossed imprint and what appears to be a metallic ink size label, which would suggest a Stetson date c.1940.
