Though it would technically violate the chronological constraints of this thread, I’m surprised Jimmy Witherspoon has yet to be mentioned here (or anywhere else in the FL, search says!). Born in Arkansas in 1920, Witherspoon got his first break in Calcutta, India during WWII. Serving in the U.S. Merchant Marine he was asked to play in a big band there that got frequent play over the U.S. Armed Forces Radio Network in the Pacific Theater. At war’s end Witherspoon had a music career waiting; raised up in the Big Band style he carried it forward as the large jazz bands broke apart into smaller groups over the late 50’s & early 60’s, and in many ways himself formed a bridge to electric blues (E.g., he revived the then-forgotten pre-1920's song “Ain’t Nobody’s Business” in 1947, making it a best selling record by 1949 & a requisite standard for every blues singer thereafter).

I first heard him while living in an old Merchant Marine barracks on the Amsterdam waterfront back in the year 2000. My Spanish roommate, learning I was from Chicago, threw on a French CD compilation of Witherspoon’s tunes entitled something like Le Charmeur avec la voix de velours ('The Charmer with the Voice of Velour' - could you be more French please?).

“Chicago?! You like jazz? You like the Blues?” he asked. Yes, yes I do!
