I think I used to have something saved , maybe eBay (I can't remember) , from the man and woman that taught or teach Hitching Horse Hair in the Montana Prison . Awesome Horse Hair stuff .
You see, what do I know. I see Buffalo and write Brooklyn. When I see someone in the fine westerns that you've been wearing, I get all confused that those hats are in NY state. To an old country boy like me, it's all the same. Kind of like "city stables" is an oxymoron in my world.
I'm a little familiar with some of the Roanhorse work. Beautiful. Were you to some day end up with that headstall, let me know, I'll find you a horse to put it on.
Michael, there's a lot of history about these crafts in western prisons. AZ, MT and TX are some I'm familiar with. From what I understand, it started in the late 1800's. Some of this stuff shows up on the bay every now and then and brings in some serious $$$$.

One of (the many) things that fascinates me about the old western hats is the sweatband imprint of the retail store where they were sold. So many were named for Jewish immigrants who migrated to far off western towns to do what they new how to do from the old country - sell clothing. Some day when I have less to do and I can devote more time to my hats (my wife is rolling her eyes) I will do some reading on the stories behind these western stores and the folks who started them. Maybe I'll look for that horse then too. They are beautiful animals.
There are quite a few stories of Jewish Cowboys and the western migration of Jews. Seth Bullock, a famous western lawman who traveled to Deadwood SD during the gold rush to open a hardware store, had a Jewish partner by the name of Sol (Solomon) Star.
