Our public library offers a free notary service. That's where we go when we need something notarized. You do need to ask ahead of time to find out when the notaries (I think there are two at our branch) will be working.

My father worked at a high end Conoco station on Monaco Parkway in Denver in the late '50's. I remember him saying he pumped a lot of 1 dollar gas purchases into cars for kids so their dads wouldn't know how far they had driven his car. A dollar would get you 3.3 gallons.

My lowest premium gas price (as I remember it) was 29.9 in the late '60's. It was high-octane - heavily leaded - stuff that would work in the very-high-compression engines of the day.
As your father said, $1 worth of gas would get us through a Saturday night date. (the car in the snow-photo is a '61 Chevy, so it's roughly in that time-period)

That brings back memories…

When I was a youngster in the early 60’s, we had a 1962 Lincoln Continental 4-door Convertible. It was big, heavy (around 5500 lbs) and the 430ci engine devoured premium gas even at idle. My mom would stop at the local gas station almost daily and hand the attendant two $1.00 dollar bills. At about 0.28 per gallon, it didn’t fill the tank but we could go all day.

This reminds me of a related story. The customers at the station were mostly of the "special people" type given its location. Rules did not generally apply to them. One lady had a new tripower Oldsmobile and refused to shut the engine off while fueling it up, probably because she had trouble starting it without flooding. After beginning to put in fuel, my dad told her she would have to shut it off because she was gaining on him. She laughed and turned off the engine. One of the many services they provided was teaching people how to start their high performance cars without flooding them.

Question for the Chevy experts. Did the '58 Chevy not sell well? There were and still are quite a few '59 models around here, but I can't think of a single '58 left.

Not a Chevy expert, but my anecdotal evidence is the opposite around here. I'm always looking for '59s as the first car I ever wanted (as a small lad) was a black '59 El Camino. My folks also had a '59 sedan somewhere along in there.

And I had the same thought, but assembled this way - what country other than an Eastern Block one was importing a single Russian-made car back then?

The caption / commentary I saw with the pic - but it is simply from another forum, so far from confirmed documentation:

So I saw this pic in a local media content site. Apparently the story is that there was a bit of automobile export of Lada's from the USSR to Canada back in the day. This gas station owner refuses to serve them due to the Soviets' war in Afghanistan.

For the record, I don't support his business practice, but I thought the pic was pretty cool nonetheless!

I wondered that too. But then I figured maybe about anywhere on the continent there was a market for an inexpensive automobile.
