    Should I shorten this brim?

Ooooohhhhh, I dunno. I do know that a 1/4" would be WAY too much! I think it looks fine the way it is. However, if you feel like you MUST trim the brim. I would go no more than 1/8". Believe me 1/4" in a huge change!

What do you use to shave?

Now that's the way to get people into straight shaving! Did he shave with a straight before or is this his first experience? If it is his first, is he a convert now? Good for you!

    Shaving travel set-up

Since the TSA would have a cow finding a straight razor in my Dopp kit, I use a Schick injector with a travel tube of Truefitt & Hill 1805 shave cream and a cheap Badger brush I picked up for the princely sum of $16 at (http://www.mysteryrazor.com). I use a large pill bottle courtesy of...

What do you use to shave?

For about $25-$35 you can buy a vintage "shave ready" straight razor and never buy another blade again. I haven't purchased any blades for years! :-)

    Bow Ties

You look great sporting your new bow ties! As I have mentioned in previous posts, for those (or their wives) that have an interest, ties are very easy to make, so says my wife. She has made five quite wonderful bow ties for me, of which three out of the five are my favorites above all my...

White tie dress trousers Double stripe

Unfortunately, on our side of the pond, we collectively don't even know much about dinner jackets, much less proper formal attire. I recommend asking at: http://www.thelondonlounge.net/forum/ http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/forum/index.php These forums may be able to point you in...

    Straight Razor Advice needed.

Of the many I own(12 and one Japanese kamisori), I have found that those which are the hardest to hone usually keep their edge longer, while those that quickly take an edge need "touch ups" with the hone more regularly. So, composition of the steel, how the steel was heat treated, its...

    Straight Razor Advice needed.

Actually, every few months. But this depends on usage and type of beard, as usual YMMV. Strop before EVERY shave! (I also, after each shave, dry then strop 4-5 passes on linen and 10 or so on leather- I found it really lengthens time between honing)

    Straight Razor Advice needed.

Oh, don't give up so easily. Anyone can learn how to shave with a straight. As in my previous post, read all the wikis in that forum and start slowly. Keep the angle shallow and just start with shaving one cheek. Heck, just do one pass on one cheek to start. Then the next day, take two...

    Straight Razor Advice needed.

I sure like the scales on that straight! The fat boy of course is a great DE shave and I have one and occasionally use it when I am under difficult time constraints. Did you find out if the straight is shave ready? Have you a strop? If not, may I recommend this...

    Straight Razor Advice needed.

You do have a strop, do you not? If not, get one! Also, I recommend you practice stropping with a butter knife or other dull knife to get the "hang of it" before you take your sharp blade and cut up that nice piece of leather........ again, the wikis will have videos to show you how.......

    Straight Razor Advice needed.

If it is this form: http://www.straightrazorplace.com/ then you are in good hands. Ensure it is "shave ready" (I'm sure it will be, but you should ask). Please read all the wikis in the forum. They are VERY helpful and informative. Once you get the hang of it, you will probably do as I do...

What do you use to shave?

I highly recommend the aforementioned site: http://straightrazorplace.com/forums/ Sharpening a straight razor is nothing like sharpening a knife. The stones start at 1K grit and go up to 16k and the technique is different. Read all the wikis on the site and don't be afraid to ask...

All You Need to Know About Hat Etiquette

Not quite off topic, but..... One Friday a month I attend "steak night" at a local American Legion Post accompanying my wife and her mother. I am known for my fedoras and upon entering I will place my hat on the juke box, not having a convenient place to hang it. I have commented that if I...

What do you use to shave?

I usually shave with one of my numerous straight razors (my favorites are a restored W&B, a Boker, and a Claus) using one of three badger brushes (favorite is Badger & Blade 2009 limited edition) and T&H soaps(Marlborough and Yardley are favorites though Tabac is also a favorite). When in a...

    Hat Sightings

Visiting my local cigar shop for a nice robusto yesterday(wearing my usual summer time Panama), I noticed more men wearing Panamas or straws as of late. Several years ago I would rarely see anyone wearing anything but a baseball cap. I find this encouraging. As the climate changes this...

    Pulling Off the Casual Look

I think that it depend on the fedora. I doubt anyone can get away with a homburg, but I do just fine with my Open Road. It goes well with jeans and a henley shirt, though most of the time I'm in chinos when casual. In fact, purely by accident I was caught with jeans with wide red braces...
