I actually think that bowlers today look best when they are worn outside of the traditional city-gent look. They will go with anything --- best to find one with a low crown though. Jeans and a bowler - perfect!
I saw this today - interesting conversation beginning.

If the first lady is Barbara Cartland, as one of the comments suggests, then it's definitely not 60s or 70s as she died in her 80s about ten years ago. Those English accents disappeared soon after the Beatles strummed their first chords.
This might interest you all - a clip from the 1940s, but seeming as old as the 1840s!

Yes, I was puzzled, Charlie. I didn't ask about the price of the fur ones, but perhaps the high cost of their wool bowlers comes from the shellac structure and the personal fitting more than from the covering.
conformity
Hats were a sign of conformity so were thrown away in the 60s when people started to resent authority in all areas of life. Now they are a sign of non-conformity, so young people are wearing them to the bemusement of their parents. It's all cycles ...
Interestingly I phoned Patey's (the most exclusive maker of bowlers in the UK - £400+) and their normal bowlers are made with wool not fur felt. They said they could make me one in fur but it would not be their normal style. That brown one is fabulous though! Where did you find it?
To blend or not to blend
All very interesting thoughts. It doesn't bother me in the least, but it struck me how strange a few decades make. 50 years ago I would have provoked horror for NOT wearing a hat. Then the wearing of a bowler was one way to blend in with the crowd, now the opposite is...
There are a few people in my life who seem to have the strongest reaction against hats. Has anyone else had something similar? Not just, "I don't like hats" but "Get that off, it looks ridiculous ... I'm not walking down the street with you wearing that"
Hi Zeropositive, I live in London and have been into Bates many times and knew nothing of this - so thanks for the tip. They told me only a month ago that business was better than ever - more hats sold in January 2009 than in the whole of 2008. So this is a great shame. Hornet's is a good...
Fascinating! Also interesting to see the black waistcoat with the white tie (forerunner of the black cummerbund?) and the fancier variety on the right with tails. I'm afraid I gave up on tails a few years ago.
But no one in this forum is doing what was 'meant to be done' when these hats were invented! Landed gentry and above would only be able to wear a topper, you couldn't leave the house without some hat on your head etc. None of the women on here would have had a vote, and I'd be in prison for...
Try downstairs at Turnbull & Asser. Some wonderful colours. I have a couple of smoking caps from Locks, but I had them remove the tassel. Then they are perfectly wearable on the street. My black one was admired (at least to my face!) at Glyndebourne last year.
