    Why low armholes? My theory.

Exactly. The next time I am over at Martin Greenfield I'll ask the guys over there what they think led to the change. They've been around long enough to have experienced it first hand.

    Why low armholes? My theory.

Another theory that I've come across is that it takes much more skill to make/sew/attach a smaller armhole (not as forgiving of mistakes, etc.) so that as standards starting dropping and mass production really took off that it was just easier and cheaper to make larger armholes. Again though, I...

    Proper Polo wear?

Up here in the NE (NY and CT), most everyone dresses very preppy for polo. So I would recommend linen trousers, OCBD shirt (blue, white or pink), bow-tie, blazer. Straw hat optional.

    Color New York: '40s - '60s

    The quality of a suit

And feels spectacular. Instead of anytime soon, the trend toward more luxurious, finer fabrics isn't going anywhere w/n our lifetimes except toward even finer materials.

    jazz and cocktails in NYC?

The Brandy Library (in Tribeca) perfectly fits all of your requirements. They only play jazz, serves perfectly made (though expensive) cocktails, the best scotch/brandy/cognac selection you'll ever see, and has the requisite atmosphere.

    Necktie Knots

I received it this past Christmas and heartily agree - it is a fun read. As far as the knots go, all of the ones that they give a full or 1/2 page write-up to are well worth wearing. I particularly like the Grantchester. For an odder knot that I've taken to wearing, the variation of the...

Chumleys - NY Speakeasy Institution Near Death

Came across this a short while ago. Doesn't look good for Chumleys as a wall of the building that houses it has collapsed and the FDNY may be tearing down the entire building. If so this would be the death of a NY institution as it is extremely doubtful that it could ever be recreated...

    On the Beat

I'm guessing it's more of a big-city phenomenon. Here in NYC cops walk their beats regularly and you always seem them around, being friendly with business owners, etc. We also get a good number of mounted police on a regular basis which I always found to be really cool. The city is actually...

    Deadstock

Having been in the shop, I'd never buy a suit from the guys they have working there. They're all lower east side hipsters who couldn't even tell me what the cut on theirs shirts was when I asked. After that I didn't even bother to hear what they had or didn't have to say about the suits. And...
