On Hiatus. Really. Or Not.
From the story...

"In a preliminary exploration, a borehole was dug which penetrated a crate and a shape that could be an aeroplane was identified. Experts determined that there was certainly something metallic at the site and that what is under the surface is not a natural feature."

Woo hoo!

Surveys at one of three sites identified in the country have shown large areas of electrically conductive material, suggesting the metal parts of the aircraft, around 30 feet deep.

The location and depth is consistent with eight eye witness reports given to Mr Cundall.

''We put a camera down a borehole and went into a box and through two inches of Canadian pine,'' Mr Cundall disclosed.

''Yes, we did see what we thought was an aeroplane.''

"participants insisted they are not motivated by money" to include the Myanmar government? Oh wait....."Myanmar government will keep 50 percent, according to agreements they have signed." ....and..."Myanmar's Spitfires will be put up for sale."

Well, they weren't buried in the desert for a thousand years, but they are worth "considerably" more than they were when new.
One figure says that they cost $12,604 when new. I think they might sell for more than that now. In a way I feel sorry for Myanmar. It's a small way, but still... Most governments that potentially had a flight of Spitfires fall on their heads would be plotting which of their museums would get the booty. Myanmar would rather have the money. Although I suppose there will be a bunch of museums raising funds to buy one. So it's a win-win situation.

Hundreds of Spitfires and other aircraft that crashed during the Battle of Britain are still waiting to be unearthed across Britain, historians have disclosed.

And a pensioner claimed a whole squadron of the planes could be found immaculately preserved under houses in Birmingham. Matt Queenan, 83, said he helped bury the planes in 1950 under instructions from the War Office, greasing them up and encasing them in boxes.

I certainly hope they can recover enough parts to put together at least a few good airframes. I remember watching reels of the FAA dumping thousands of corsairs into the ocean due to the terms of lend lease and feeling horrified. Too bad aluminum doesn't do well in salt water.
