I have a Stetson I bought at an Auction, the box it came in says it's an Open Road 3x, the hat looks like an Open Road, but on the sweat band it says Stetson 5x on one side and has the initials I.R. on the other side, of course the hat size is on the back, and there is something on the front. BUT it doesn't say Open Road anywhere on the sweat band. So my question is; is this really an Open Road hat? I can post pictures when I get back to the house this evening.

That's an "argument" that is ongoing on the Lounge. I have a Stetson 3X that looks, smells, walks, and talks like an OR, and was made on the same block, etc. I call it an OR. Purists brand me a heretic. Same with a Resistol San Antonio I have. No markings, but it's a SA to me.

And yes, please post pics.

I have a grey-blue Royal Stetson that sure looks like an OR, and I have a Silverbelly Royal Stetson Deluxe OR that has all the markings saying Open Road on the sweatband. The only difference I can see is the 6-rib thin ribbon on the unmarked grey-blue "OR." I consider them both OR's, although I have considered a ribbon switch on the unmarked "OR" to make it look like a wide ribbon fedora... but then I really like it the way it is, too....

Both beautiful hats! I like the six cord ribbon, gives it a different look.

I like it the way it is. I had the same decision to make yesterday, when I took my new-to-me Knox Forty to Ignacio. The hat arrived with a wide ribbon, and Ignacio told me that hat was meant to have a Western thin ribbon, but he only had them in low-quality Petersham. It looked so bad that I decided to keep the ribbon the hat arrived in, but I will try to acquire a good thin ribbon later.

Wide ribbons abound, 6ply thin, not so much. Both look beyond excellent.

Well, I'm not a purist, but I'd probably take the position the 6-ply makes it "not" an OR. I dig those colors and hats, though!

Hi Gents,
Is there a thread here just for strictly gray/grey/shades of silver hats?
It seems Gray is the most, well favoured as it's a classic color of hat that can be worn with almost anything from suits to jeans in general.:D
That would be my first and foremost color of hat with brown and black then tan in order etc.

Thanks,
Ro

I have current production Stetsons that only have the model name on the paper label and box. In the future, if the paper label is removed and the box missing will the hat stop being the model it originally was? I also have hats where the liners and the sweats have been replaced but I still think of them as what they originally were. All this is a long way of saying that the look, feel, dimensions, proportions, color, etc. are what are import to me as a wearer and not a collector.

Anybody have personal experience with custom hats by Northwest Hat Company or Hufvud? How is there quality and how long did it take to receive the hat? Any tips or suggestions in dealing with either?

I have a 5 foot tall stack of custom hats by Mike Miller of NW Hats. He is my hatter. Prices are competitive and the quality is outstanding. There is a devoted thread here on the lounge that I suggest you check out.

I have no experience with Hufvud, @deadlyhandsome has one and some on order I think. There is also a thread there.

Mike at Northwest made this beautiful "early thirties" fedora to my specs a couple of years ago. He was a pleasure to deal with, and the quality of this 100% beaver hat for only about $75 more than an off-the-shelf Stetson is simply awesome. I seem to recall it was about three or four months from first contact to delivery. I'm no expert on custom hats - Northwest is that only custom hater I have dealt with - but I'd order another from him in a second.

I have 2 customs from Mike and want to order more. I also have customs from Michael Gannon, Art Fawcett and John Penman and would love to order more from them (as well as several other custom hatters).

I suggest checking them all out!

As @Redfokker mentioned, Brent / @deadlyhandsome has hats from NW Hats and Hufvud and can give you his opinion on both. Brent also has several hats from Phoenix Hats and can offer his opinion on them, too.

Good luck with your first? custom!
